IEC 62321-10:2020 specifies one normative technique for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in polymers of electrotechnical products. These PAHs can especially be found in the plastic and rubber parts of a wide range of consumer articles. They are present as impurities in some of the raw materials used in the production of such articles, in particular in extender oils and in carbon black. They are not added intentionally to the articles and do not perform any specific function as constituents of the plastic or rubber parts. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC MS) test method is suitable for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These test methods have been evaluated for use with plastics and rubbers. These test methods have been evaluated for use with ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) containing individual PAHs ranging from 37,2 mg;kg to 119 mg;kg and rubbers containing individual PAHs ranging from 1 mg;kg to 221,2 mg;kg. WARNING – This document does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this document to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. This horizontal standard is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 108. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of horizontal standards in the preparation of its publications. The contents of this horizontal standard will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62321-10:2020 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies a precise analytical method for determining polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in polymers and electronic components found in electrotechnical products. This standard particularly targets plastic and rubber components, which may contain PAHs as impurities from raw materials such as extender oils and carbon black. These substances are not intentionally added but are of concern due to their environmental and health impacts.
The method prescribed in IEC 62321-10 uses gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), a highly sensitive and reliable technique widely recognized for detecting trace levels of PAHs in polymers and electronic assemblies. The standard is part of the IEC 62321 series, which provides globally harmonized methods for assessing the presence of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, supporting regulatory compliance and environmental safety initiatives.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
IEC 62321-10:2020 applies to the determination of specific PAHs within plastics and rubbers used in electrotechnical products. The method suits polymers like ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) and various rubber materials, detecting PAHs concentrations ranging from 1 mg/kg to over 200 mg/kg. -
Analytical Principle
The standard outlines the use of GC-MS to separate, identify, and quantify PAHs. Sample preparation includes ultrasonic or Soxhlet extraction to isolate PAHs from polymer matrices, followed by clean-up steps to ensure measurement accuracy. -
Calibration and Quality Control
Detailed procedures define the preparation of calibration standards, including internal and surrogate standards to enhance analytical precision and accuracy. The standard defines performance criteria such as detection limits, repeatability, and reproducibility, ensuring reliable results. -
Safety and Compliance
While IEC 62321-10 specifies their testing method, it emphasizes users’ responsibility to follow proper laboratory safety practices. It does not address all safety concerns associated with PAHs handling or regulatory compliance directly, but facilitates adherence to environmental regulations by providing standardized test procedures.
Applications
-
Regulatory Compliance
Manufacturers and testing laboratories utilize IEC 62321-10 to meet international chemical safety regulations restricting PAHs in electrical and electronic equipment. This supports compliance with frameworks such as EU REACH, RoHS directives, and other regional substance restrictions. -
Environmental Management
By detecting PAHs impurities in electronic product components, this standard helps companies assess environmental risk and reduce hazardous substance content in end products, aligning with circular economy goals and eco-design strategies. -
Quality Assurance in Manufacturing
Electronics producers apply this standard to screen raw materials and final products, ensuring that polymer and rubber parts comply with safety thresholds for PAHs, thus preventing contamination in consumer goods and industrial equipment. -
Research and Development
Research labs use the GC-MS method standardized by IEC 62321-10 to investigate sources of PAHs in polymers, evaluate alternatives with lower environmental impact, and innovate safer materials for sustainable electronics.
