IEC 62384:2020 specifies performance requirements for electronic controlgear for use on DC or AC supplies up to 1 000 V (alternating current at 50 Hz or 60 Hz) and with an output frequency which can deviate from the supply frequency, associated with LED modules according to IEC 62031. Controlgear for LED modules specified in this document are designed to provide constant voltage or current. Deviations from the pure voltage and current types do not exclude the gear from this document. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006 and Amendment 1:2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - scope extension (direct current from 250 V to 1 000 V); - new specifications for measuring the power factor for controlgear with settable/non-constant output (for instance, to allow for constant light output); - deletion of audio frequency requirements; - selection of current test circuit by module capacitance (instead of selecting by having or not having logic circuitry) plus test circuit setup changes.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62384:2020 specifies performance requirements for electronic controlgear (LED drivers) intended to power LED modules. It applies to controlgear supplied from DC or AC supplies (up to 1 000 V, AC at 50 Hz or 60 Hz) and to outputs whose frequency may deviate from the mains. The standard covers controlgear designed to provide constant voltage or constant current to LED modules (IEC 62031) and replaces the 2006 edition with a technical revision published in 2020.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and classification
- Applies to DC/AC supplied electronic controlgear up to 1 000 V; edition extends DC capability from earlier 250 V to 1 000 V.
- Classification by load type (single-value vs multiple-value), output voltage and output current.
- Performance tests (type tests)
- Type testing requirements (not intended as production-line tests).
- Tests are carried out with LED modules meeting specified wattage tolerances and with output cable lengths of 20 cm and 200 cm unless declared otherwise.
- Output behaviour
- Requirements for starting, connection, and stable voltage/current during operation; suitable for devices that deviate from pure voltage/current types.
- Guidance that compliant controlgear is expected to operate satisfactorily within approximately 92% to 106% of rated supply voltage (per manufacturer specs).
- Power and power quality
- Total circuit power definition (controlgear + LED module).
- New 2020 specifications for measuring circuit power factor, including controlgear with settable or non‑constant outputs (e.g., constant light output modes).
- Capacitive loads and test circuits
- Test-circuit selection is now based on module input capacitance (high vs low), with ~100 nF used as a typical threshold.
- Special measurement procedures for capacitive load current.
- Other changes
- Deletion of audio-frequency impedance requirements from the previous edition.
- Endurance, marking, supply current and operational-abnormal-condition tests defined.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: LED driver and lighting system manufacturers, test laboratories, product certifiers, lighting designers and specifiers, and compliance officers.
- Practical applications: Designing and validating LED controlgear for compatibility with IEC 62031 LED modules; defining type-test protocols; ensuring product performance, interoperability and product claims for dimming/constant light modes; preparing technical documentation and regulatory submissions.
