IEC 62386-351:2025 is applicable to control devices to be used in, on, or attached to, a luminaire. This document builds on the digital addressable lighting interface as specified in the IEC 62386 series of standards, by adding specific requirements for power consumption, integrated bus and AUX power supplies, a mechanism to arbitrate between multiple application controllers, and a memory bank definition for multi-master devices. This document is only applicable to control devices complying with IEC 62386‑103.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62386-351:2025 is a part of the IEC 62386 series for the digital addressable lighting interface. This particular standard specifies particular requirements for luminaire‑mounted control devices - control devices that are used in, on, or attached to a luminaire. It supplements the general control device requirements of IEC 62386-103 by adding requirements for power consumption, integrated bus and AUX power supplies, multi‑master memory definitions, and an arbitration mechanism when multiple application controllers are present.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope limitation: Applies only to control devices that comply with IEC 62386‑103.
- Power management: Defines requirements for integrated bus power supplies and AUX power supplies, including automatic detection and enablement behavior.
- Power consumption limits: Adds specific requirements for AUX power consumption and bus power current ratings (referenced in the standard’s tables).
- Switched‑supply output: Defines behavior for a switched-supply output (enabled/disabled) for type A devices and references memory locations for configuration.
- Device types: Classifies luminaire‑mounted control devices into types (A, B, C, D) depending on power source and controller architecture (e.g., externally powered multi‑master vs. bus‑powered).
- Application controller arbitration: Specifies a mechanism to arbitrate between multiple application controllers within a luminaire to prevent conflicts.
- Multi‑master memory bank: Provides a memory bank definition (e.g., Memory Bank 201) to support multi‑master devices and shared configuration.
- Transmission and timing: Includes protocol structure, timing, commands and variable declarations needed for operation in a lighting control bus environment.
- Markings and documentation: Requires product markings and literature to indicate compliance and configuration details.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 62386-351:2025 is intended for professionals involved in designing, manufacturing, integrating and certifying connected lighting systems:
- Luminaire manufacturers integrating control devices or supplying luminaires with built‑in controls.
- Control device and component designers implementing integrated bus/AUX power and multi‑master features.
- System integrators and installers specifying interoperable luminaires and ensuring correct behavior when multiple controllers are present.
- Testing laboratories and certification bodies validating compliance with IEC 62386 requirements.
- Specification writers and procurement teams seeking interoperable, safe, and energy‑efficient luminaire controls.
