IEC 62442-3:2018 defines a measurement method for the power losses of electromagnetic transformers as well as the power losses and the standby power of electronic convertors for tungsten-halogen lamps and for LED light source(s). It is applicable for controlgear that are designed for use on DC supplies up to 1 000 V and/or AC supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz. A calculation method of the efficiency of the mentioned controlgear for tungstenhalogen lamps and LED light source(s) is also defined. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision and has been harmonized with IEC 62442-1 and IEC 62442-2.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62442-3:2018 - Energy performance of lamp controlgear (Part 3) - specifies a standardized method of measurement to determine the efficiency of controlgear used with tungsten‑halogen lamps and LED light sources. This second edition (2018) replaces the 2014 edition and has been harmonized with IEC 62442‑1 and IEC 62442‑2. The standard covers measurement of power losses for electromagnetic transformers and both power losses and standby power for electronic convertors, applicable to controlgear designed for DC and/or AC supplies up to 1 000 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of application
- Measurement and calculation methods for total input power, no‑load input, standby power, and efficiency of controlgear‑lamp circuits (controlgear + lamp(s)).
- Exclusions: controlgear integral to a lamp, controlgear circuits with series capacitors, and controllable wire‑wound electromagnetic controlgear.
- Measurement setups
- Defined test arrangements for input/output power, no‑load (off) input, and standby power measurements for both electromagnetic and electronic controlgear.
- Efficiency calculation
- Procedure to calculate controlgear efficiency from measured input and output values and to quantify power losses.
- Quality of measurement
- Requirements addressing measurement uncertainty, instrument accuracy, thermocouple/temperature monitoring, sampling/testing sample size, and measurement circuits.
- Electrical ratings
- Applicable to controlgear intended for DC or AC supplies up to 1 000 V and standard mains frequencies (50/60 Hz).
- Normative references
- Cites related standards including IEC 61047, IEC 61347‑1, IEC 61347‑2‑13, IEC 61558, and IEC 62301 for related test and safety requirements.
Practical applications - who uses IEC 62442‑3:2018
- Manufacturers of transformers, electronic convertors and lamp controlgear - to validate and optimize energy performance and standby consumption.
- Test laboratories - for repeatable, harmonized measurement protocols to report efficiency and standby power.
- Regulatory bodies and energy program managers - to set compliance criteria, minimum efficiency requirements, and energy labeling for lighting products.
- Product designers and R&D teams - to benchmark losses, reduce standby consumption, and improve overall system efficiency.
- Procurement/specification authors and energy auditors - to compare products on measured efficiency and lifecycle energy performance.
