IEC 62506:2013 provides guidance on the application of various accelerated test techniques for measurement or improvement of product reliability. Identification of potential failure modes that could be experienced in the use of a product/item and their mitigation is instrumental to ensure dependability of an item. The object of the methods is to either identify potential design weakness or provide information on item dependability, or to achieve necessary reliability/availability improvement, all within a compressed or accelerated period of time. This standard addresses accelerated testing of non-repairable and repairable systems. It can be used for probability ratio sequential tests, fixed duration tests and reliability improvement/growth tests, where the measure of reliability may differ from the standard probability of failure occurrence. This standard also extends to present accelerated testing or production screening methods that would identify weakness introduced into the product by manufacturing error, which could compromise product dependability. Keywords: test techniques for measurement or improvement of product reliability
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62506:2013, titled Methods for Product Accelerated Testing, is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard offers comprehensive guidance on accelerated testing techniques aimed at measuring and improving product reliability in a shortened timeframe. The methods target identifying potential failure modes, mitigating design weaknesses, and enhancing product dependability. Covering both repairable and non-repairable systems, IEC 62506 supports probability ratio sequential tests, fixed duration tests, and reliability growth tests, including tests addressing manufacturing-related weaknesses.
Key Topics
-
Accelerated Test Methods: The standard classifies accelerated testing into qualitative (Type A) and quantitative (Types B & C). Type A includes Highly Accelerated Limit Tests (HALT), Highly Accelerated Stress Tests (HAST), and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening/Audit (HASS/HASA). Type B and C focus on quantitative reliability testing and time or event compression methods.
-
Cumulative Damage Model: IEC 62506 discusses cumulative damage and degradation models that underpin accelerated test design and interpretation.
-
Failure Mechanism Identification: The standard emphasizes the identification of failure mechanisms and appropriate stress modeling to simulate real-world product usage accurately.
-
Multiple Stress Acceleration: Techniques for applying single and multiple stresses during testing to replicate or accelerate real operational conditions.
-
Reliability Growth and Compliance Testing: Guidelines are provided for designing tests aimed at demonstrating compliance with reliability requirements, promoting reliability growth, and assessing the reliability of components and systems.
-
Testing Strategy in Product Development: The standard integrates accelerated testing within the product development lifecycle, covering planning, sampling, stress determination, test duration, and data analysis.
-
Limitations and Practical Considerations: IEC 62506 highlights the boundaries and constraints of accelerated testing, ensuring realistic expectations and effective application.
Applications
-
Product Reliability Improvement: Companies can use IEC 62506 to design accelerated testing protocols that identify design weaknesses early, facilitating enhanced reliability and availability.
-
Manufacturing Screening: The standard aids in developing production screening tests that detect manufacturing-induced defects affecting dependability.
-
Compliance Verification: Manufacturers can demonstrate conformance with predetermined reliability levels through well-structured accelerated reliability compliance tests.
-
Reliability Growth Monitoring: Organizations involved in iterative product development can employ these methods to track and improve reliability during development phases efficiently.
-
Component and System Testing: Both individual components and complete systems are covered, enabling comprehensive reliability assessments across product assemblies.
