IEC 62541-3:2015 describes the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) AddressSpace and its Objects. It is the OPC UA meta model on which OPC UA information models are based. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2010 and constitutes a technical revision. It includes the following changes: - Added rules for subtyping enumerations; - Added Property EnumValues; - Added Property ValueAsText; - Added EventType SystemStatusChangeEventType; - Added Properties MaxArrayLength and MaxStringLength; - Removed the concept of ModelParent; - Added EventType ProgressEventType; - Stated that it is allowed to use TAI in all places where UTC time is used; - Added Property EngineeringUnits; - Added ModellingRules OptionalPlaceholder and MandatoryPlaceholder.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62541-3:2015 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) Address Space Model. As Part 3 of the OPC UA series, this standard specifies the meta model for the AddressSpace and its Objects, which form the foundational structure upon which OPC UA information models are built. This edition supersedes the first edition from 2010, introducing significant technical revisions to enhance modeling capabilities and interoperability within industrial automation and related fields.
The standard introduces refined concepts and rules for representing nodes, objects, variables, references, and events within the OPC UA information model. It also supports emerging requirements such as support for time representations in TAI format and enriched mechanisms for enumerations, subtyping, and property definitions.
Key Topics
- AddressSpace Concepts: Describes the structure and semantics of the OPC UA AddressSpace, including how nodes-such as Objects, Variables, and Methods-are represented and interrelated through References.
- Node and Object Models: Defines NodeClasses, attributes, and the relationships between nodes, enabling standardized representation of data and its metadata within OPC UA.
- Type Definitions and Subtyping: Establishes rules for creating complex TypeDefinitions for Objects and Variables, their instance declarations, and mechanisms for subtyping to ensure extensibility and reuse.
- Event Modeling: Provides the framework for consistent representation of events, including the introduction of new EventTypes such as
SystemStatusChangeEventTypeandProgressEventType. - Properties and Modelling Rules: Adds new properties like
EnumValues,ValueAsText,EngineeringUnits, and modeling rules such asOptionalPlaceholderandMandatoryPlaceholderto enhance clarity and specificity in data modeling. - Reference Types: Specifies standard ReferenceTypes that define hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships between nodes, offering a rich set of semantic connections within the information model.
- Time Standards: Clarifies the allowance of using International Atomic Time (TAI) alongside Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) for time-related attributes, promoting greater precision in temporal data representation.
Applications
IEC 62541-3:2015 serves as a crucial reference for organizations and developers who design and implement OPC UA-compliant systems in various industries, including:
- Industrial Automation: Facilitates interoperability of control systems, sensors, and devices by providing a common AddressSpace model for data exchange and system integration.
- Energy Management: Enables standardized data models for smart grids and energy distribution networks, improving monitoring and control through uniform object modeling.
- Building Automation: Supports integration of HVAC, lighting, and security systems by defining consistent structures to represent devices and their data.
- Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES): Assists in bridging factory floor data with enterprise software by standardizing object and event models.
- Asset Management: Improves condition monitoring and predictive maintenance by defining consistent property and event modeling for equipment status and diagnostics.
By adhering to IEC 62541-3:2015, organizations ensure their OPC UA implementations are robust, scalable, and interoperable across platforms and vendors.
