IEC 62541-7:2015 describes the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) Profiles. The Profiles in this document are used to segregate features with regard to testing of OPC UA products and the nature of the testing (tool based or lab based). This includes the testing performed by the OPC Foundation provided OPC UA CTT (a self-test tool) and by the OPC Foundation provided Independent certification test labs. It is also defining functionality that can only be tested in an a lab and defining the grouping of functionality that is to be used when testing OPC UA products either in a lab or using automated tools. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2012 and constitutes a technical revision. It includes the following changes: - Added a large number of new Facets to cover additional functional areas of OPC UA. Most significantly: - Facets for Historical Access; - Facets for Aggregates; - Facets for HTTPs; - New Security Facets; - New User Token Facet that supports anonymous access; - Best Practice Facets as well as New Security Policy for asymmetric key length > 2048.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62541-7:2015 is an international standard that defines the profiles for the OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA). The document establishes the framework for segregating OPC UA features based on their testing requirements-either tool-based or laboratory-based-to ensure consistent product conformance. This second edition, a technical revision of the 2012 edition, introduces new functional facets, including advanced security features, historical access, and support for HTTPS, enhancing the reliability and interoperability of OPC UA implementations.
This standard is fundamental for developers, testers, and certification bodies focusing on OPC UA products, providing a structured methodology for defining and verifying compliance through clearly defined profiles and conformance units.
Key Topics
-
OPC UA Profiles and Conformance Units
IEC 62541-7 categorizes OPC UA functionality into conformance units that bundle related features for practical testing. These units streamline the certification process and clarify the scope of functionality under evaluation. -
Testing Framework
The standard differentiates between testing methods: automated tool-based tests using OPC Foundation's OPC UA Certification Test Tool (CTT) and rigorous laboratory-based assessments performed by independent certification labs. -
New Functional Facets
Key additions include facets for:- Historical Access, enabling the querying and manipulation of historical data within OPC UA servers.
- Aggregates, supporting computation over datasets.
- HTTPS support, improving secure communication channels.
- Enhanced Security Facets, including policies for asymmetric key lengths beyond 2048 bits.
- User Token facet with support for anonymous access.
- Best Practice Facets which guide secure and performant implementation strategies.
-
Profile Categories
Profiles are organized to reflect different application scenarios, such as embedded devices or full-fledged server capabilities, allowing implementers to target specific functionalities tailored to their systems.
Applications
-
OPC UA Product Development
Vendors use IEC 62541-7 to align their products with internationally recognized profiles, ensuring their offerings are compatible with industry standards and interoperable with other OPC UA-compliant products. -
Certification and Compliance Testing
OPC UA certification labs employ the detailed conformance units to systematically verify a product’s adherence to required profiles, supporting reliable operation in industrial environments. -
Industrial Automation and Control
The standard’s focus on historical data access and advanced security makes it vital for sectors such as manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure where robust, traceable, and secure data exchange is paramount. -
Embedded Systems
Profiles targeting nano and micro embedded device servers assist manufacturers in implementing OPC UA on constrained hardware platforms without compromising essential features.
Related Standards
IEC 62541-7:2015 is part of the broader IEC 62541 series covering OPC UA. Key related standards include:
