IEC 62680-1-2:2021 defines a power delivery system covering all elements of a USB system including: Hosts, Devices, Hubs, Chargers and cable assemblies. This specification describes the architecture, protocols, power supply behavior, connectors and cabling necessary for managing power delivery over USB at up to 100W. This specification is intended to be fully compatible and extend the existing USB infrastructure. It is intended that this specification will allow system OEMs, power supply and peripheral developers adequate flexibility for product versatility and market differentiation without losing backwards compatibility. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2019 and constitutes a technical revision. It is also identified as USB Power Delivery Specification, Revision 3.0, Version 2.0 This updated release of the USB PD specification was made to incorporate all the ECNs that were made to USB PD 3.0, V1.2. This makes a full completed printed specifications with all ECNs incorporated into a hard copy specification.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62680-1-2:2021 defines the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Power Delivery (PD) specification, serving as a comprehensive international standard for managing data and power transfer across USB-enabled systems. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard extends the capabilities of the USB ecosystem by introducing up to 100W power delivery, facilitating flexible and efficient charging, powering, and data exchange among various devices and platforms. It ensures compatibility and interoperability for hosts, devices, hubs, chargers, and cable assemblies, promoting a unified architecture for both performance and safety.
Released as IEC 62680-1-2:2021 (Edition 5.0, USB PD Specification Revision 3.0, Version 2.0), this edition incorporates all Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) up to August 2019 and supersedes earlier versions, providing clear guidance for implementation and compliance in evolving electronic applications.
