Overview
IEC 62769-101-1:2023 specifies the Field Device Integration (FDI) profile of IEC 62769 for Foundation Fieldbus H1 (IEC 61784‑1_CP 1/1). This third edition (2023) updates the FDI profile to define how Foundation Fieldbus H1 devices are described, discovered and accessed by FDI communication servers and gateways. The standard delivers a formal mapping of protocol characteristics, device identification, information models and topology to enable interoperable device integration in industrial automation systems.
Key Topics and Technical Requirements
- Profile and catalog definitions: Defines the Capability File, CommunicationProfile and Profile Device constructs used to advertise protocol support and device capabilities.
- Information Model mapping: Specifies how Foundation Fieldbus device models, FunctionalGroup, BlockType and parameter sets are mapped into the FDI information model for consistent representation.
- Topology and addressing: Describes topology elements (ConnectionPoint, CommunicationDevice, Network) and an XML topology scan schema (Annex A) for network discovery and device addressing.
- Methods and services: Standardizes methods for FDI Communication Servers and Gateways including Connect, Disconnect, Transfer, GetPublishedData, SetAddress and related transfer service parameters (Annex B). The Transfer service is revised in this edition.
- Device identification and mapping: Rules for mapping device type, revision and protocol version information between Foundation Fieldbus and FDI catalogs.
- Updates in 2023 edition: Updated Transfer service; added OPERATIONs GETOD and GETDEVICETYPEINFO; added DeviceTag and Block_Index fields; removed arguments BlockTag and ServiceId; changed CFF file content type to application/vnd.ff.cff.
- Normative structure: Includes normative annexes for topology schema and transfer parameters and an informative annex for communication service arguments.
Applications and Practical Value
- Ensures interoperability of Foundation Fieldbus H1 field devices with FDI-capable host systems, asset management and control systems.
- Enables device manufacturers to produce FDI packages that correctly expose device functions, blocks and parameters for engineering tools.
- Helps system integrators and automation engineers perform standardized network discovery, device configuration, diagnostics and data exchange across multi-vendor installations.
- Supports gateway and communication server vendors in implementing consistent transfer services and topology scanning for Foundation Fieldbus H1 networks.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Device vendors and firmware engineers creating FDI packages for Foundation Fieldbus H1 devices
- System integrators and automation solution providers
- Control system, gateway and communication server developers
- Test labs and certification bodies validating FDI/Foundation Fieldbus interoperability
