Overview
IEC 62769-103-1:2023 - Field Device Integration (FDI)® Part 103-1: Profiles – PROFIBUS is an IEC international standard that defines the FDI profile for PROFIBUS fieldbuses (IEC 61784-1 CP 3/1 PROFIBUS DP and CP 3/2 PROFIBUS PA). The third edition (2023) updates protocol mappings and schema elements used by FDI Device and Communication Packages to enable consistent device description, discovery and communication for PROFIBUS-based devices.
Keywords: IEC 62769-103-1, FDI, PROFIBUS, PROFIBUS DP, PROFIBUS PA, field device integration, EDDL, device package, communication package
Key Topics
- Profile definition for PROFIBUS: Catalog and communication profile elements that specify how FDI Packages declare support for PROFIBUS DP and PA.
- Protocol support files: Definitions for ProtocolSupportFile and CommunicationProfile to associate FDI device and communication packages with PROFIBUS protocols.
- Information Model mapping: Mapping rules for ProtocolType, DeviceType, FunctionalGroup, ConnectionPoint, CommunicationDevice and Network objects in the FDI Information Model.
- Device identification and version mapping: Rules for mapping device type, revision and identification attributes (including the added DEVICE_ID element in the 2023 edition).
- Methods and services: Standardized method signatures and arguments for Connect, Disconnect, Transfer, SetAddress and other communication operations tailored to FDI communication servers and gateways.
- Schemas and annexes: Normative XML schemas for topology scan results (Annex A), transfer service parameters (Annex B) and informative mapping to PA DIM (Device Integration Model) (Annex C).
- Normative references: Links to related standards such as IEC 61784-1 (fieldbus profiles), IEC 61804 (EDDL), IEC 62541-100 (OPC UA Device Interface) and other IEC 62769 parts.
Applications
- Device manufacturers: Use the profile to create FDI Device Packages that correctly advertise PROFIBUS DP/PA protocol support and information-model mappings.
- Communication stack and gateway vendors: Implement communication packages and services (Connect/Transfer) that interoperate with FDI Clients and PROFIBUS devices.
- System integrators and automation engineers: Enable consistent device discovery, commissioning, diagnostics and maintenance workflows for PROFIBUS networks using FDI-enabled tools.
- Asset management and control system providers: Integrate PROFIBUS device metadata and topology scans into higher-level systems (DCS, SCADA, asset management).
