IEC 62873-3-3:2016(E) applies to RCDs equipped with screw-type terminals of copper - or of alloys containing at least 58 % of copper (if worked cold) or at least 50 % of copper (if worked otherwise), or of other metal or suitably coated metal, no less resistant to corrosion than copper and having mechanical properties no less suitable - for use with untreated aluminium conductors, or with screw-type terminals of aluminium material for use with copper or aluminium conductors.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 62873-3-3:2016 defines the specific requirements for residual current operated circuit-breakers (RCDs) with screw-type terminals designed to connect to external untreated aluminium conductors, and for RCDs that utilize aluminium screw-type terminals compatible with both copper and aluminium conductors. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard ensures that RCDs function safely and reliably in household and similar electrical installations where aluminium wiring is used or may be encountered.
Designed to be used alongside core RCD product standards (such as IEC 61008-1 and IEC 61009-1), this standard addresses the unique properties of aluminium and its interaction with electrical terminals. By defining clear construction and testing criteria, IEC 62873-3-3 supports safer installation practices and more robust product performance in residential and similar environments.

Key Topics
-
Terminal Material Requirements:
Screw-type terminals addressed by this standard can be made from copper, copper alloys with a minimum copper content, or other suitably coated metals that resist corrosion and have adequate mechanical strength. Aluminium terminals intended for use with both aluminium and copper conductors are specifically addressed. -
Compatibility with Untreated Aluminium and Copper Conductors:
IEC 62873-3-3 applies to RCDs with terminals capable of connecting directly to untreated aluminium conductors, and to those with aluminium terminals for either copper or aluminium conductors. -
Marking and Product Information:
The standard prescribes specific terminal markings to indicate conductor compatibility (e.g., "Al" for aluminium, "Al/Cu" for both). -
Connection and Installation Guidance:
Terminals must enable conductor connection without special preparation, ensuring straightforward installation for end users and installers. -
Mechanical and Electrical Performance Testing:
The document outlines rigorous tests for current cycling, mechanical strength, and connection reliability, ensuring terminals maintain integrity and function under repeated loading and over time. -
Test Conditions and Acceptance Criteria:
Specimens undergo controlled current cycling and temperature measurement to verify the stability of electrical connections, particularly where aluminium is involved.
Applications
IEC 62873-3-3:2016 is essential for:
-
Manufacturers of RCDs:
Ensuring their products are compatible with both aluminium and copper wiring systems, meeting international safety standards. -
Product Certification and Compliance:
Serving as a reference for certifying bodies assessing RCDs for conformity where aluminium terminals or conductors are present. -
Electrical Contractors and Installers:
Guiding best practices in residential and similar projects where untreated aluminium conductors might be used. -
Electrical System Designers:
Supporting the specification of compliant residual current devices in building designs, retrofits, and upgrades.
Proper application of this standard enhances electrical safety, installation reliability, and aligns with regulatory requirements in regions accepting or requiring aluminium conductor compatibility.
