IEC 63093-14:2019 specifies the dimensions that are of importance for mechanical interchangeability for a preferred range of EFD-cores, the essential dimensions of coil formers to be used with them, and the effective parameter values to be used in calculations involving them. It also gives guidance on the allowable limits of surface irregularities applicable to EFD-cores in accordance with the relevant generic specification. The selection of core sizes for this document is based on the philosophy of including those sizes which are industrial standards, either by inclusion in national standards, or by broad-based use in industry. This document is a specification useful in the negotiation between ferrite core manufacturers and users about surface irregularities. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 62317-14 published in 2008. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 62317-14:2008: guidelines on the limits of surface irregularities of EFD-cores were added.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63093-14:2019 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the dimensional requirements and permissible limits of surface irregularities for EFD-type ferrite cores. The standard focuses on ensuring mechanical interchangeability of EFD-cores, essential coil former dimensions, and the effective parameter values to be used in related calculations. Additionally, IEC 63093-14:2019 provides standardized criteria for assessing surface irregularities-helpful for communication and negotiations between ferrite core manufacturers and users.
The EFD core sizes selected in this standard represent industrial-standard types widely used in the electronics industry and often included in various national standards. This document replaces IEC 62317-14:2008 and incorporates revised technical guidance, particularly regarding limits on surface irregularities for EFD-cores.
Key Topics
-
Dimensional Specifications: The standard specifies the essential dimensions of EFD-cores and coil formers, facilitating reliable mechanical interchangeability.
- Core size ranges and principal dimensions are clearly defined, ensuring industry compatibility.
- Guidelines on locations and dimensions of coil former pins (for both SMD and PTH types).
-
Effective Parameter Values: The standard details the required effective parameters for EFD-cores which are necessary for accurate engineering calculations, in accordance with IEC 60205.
-
Surface Irregularities: Guidance on allowable surface irregularities-including chips, cracks, pores, flash, and crystallites-is thoroughly described.
- Maximum allowable areas for various irregularities on the mating and other surfaces.
- Strict limits for defects such as cracks, pull-outs, or excessive chipping to maintain product reliability.
-
Inspection and Quality Assurance: Specific criteria for visual inspection, helping manufacturers and users assess core compliance efficiently.
- Visual references and quantitative limits enable standardized quality checks across the industry.
Applications
-
Transformer and Inductor Manufacturing: EFD-cores are commonly used in the design and production of compact, low-profile transformers and inductors. Their flat geometry is advantageous in applications requiring reduced component height, such as in surface-mounted printed circuit boards (PCBs).
- Widely used in DC-DC converters and other high-frequency power conversion applications due to their efficient magnetic performance.
-
Quality Control & Procurement: The standard helps streamline procurement processes by providing universally recognized definitions and tolerances for ferrite core dimensions and permissible surface defects.
- Useful during supplier negotiations to ensure delivered cores meet the agreed technical criteria.
-
Product Design Consistency: By following IEC 63093-14:2019, engineers and product designers can achieve consistent performance and mechanical fit across components sourced from different manufacturers or used in varying operating environments.
Related Standards
- IEC 60205: Calculation of the effective parameters of magnetic piece parts; provides methods for determining the effective dimensions and parameters used in core calculations.
- IEC 60401-1: Terms and nomenclature for cores made of magnetically soft ferrites; defines relevant terminology.

Practical Value
Implementing IEC 63093-14:2019 helps manufacturers, quality control professionals, and users of EFD ferrite cores:
- Guarantee compatibility among different brands and suppliers.
- Enhance the reliability and electrical performance of transformers and inductors.
- Reduce disputes or ambiguity regarding core surface imperfections.
- Ensure compliance with both industry and international requirements for ferrite core production and acceptance.
By incorporating these standardized guidelines, organizations can better assure product quality, enable efficient sourcing, and contribute to the reliability of electronic assemblies worldwide.
