IEC 63115-1:2020 specifies the marking, designation, tests and requirements for sealed nickelmetal hydride cells and batteries used in industrial applications, including stationary applications. When an IEC International Standard specifying test conditions and requirements for cells used in special applications is in conflict with this document, the former takes precedence (e.g. IEC 62675). The following are some examples of applications that utilize the cells and batteries falling under the scope of this document. • Stationary applications: telecom, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), electrical energy storage system, utility switching, emergency power and similar applications. • Motive applications: fork-lift truck, golf cart, AGV (Automatic Guided Vehicle), railway, and marine, excluding road vehicles. Since this document covers batteries for various industrial applications, it includes those requirements that are common and minimum to the various applications. This document applies to cells and batteries. If the battery is divided into smaller units, the smaller unit can be tested as representative of the battery. The manufacturer clearly declares the tested unit. The manufacturer can add functions to the tested unit that are present in the final battery.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63115-1:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the performance requirements, marking, designation, and testing procedures for sealed nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes. This standard targets NiMH batteries used primarily in industrial applications. It establishes minimum common requirements applicable to a wide range of use cases, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient battery operation.
The scope of IEC 63115-1:2020 covers sealed NiMH cells and batteries for industrial and stationary applications such as telecommunications, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), electrical energy storage systems, utility switching, and emergency power. Additionally, it includes motive applications like fork-lift trucks, golf carts, automated guided vehicles (AGV), railways, and marine applications, excluding road vehicles. The standard recognizes that when other IEC standards specifying conditions for special applications conflict with IEC 63115-1, those specialized standards take precedence.
Key Topics
IEC 63115-1:2020 includes detailed provisions on several critical aspects of NiMH battery performance and testing:
-
Marking and Designation: Requirements for clear, durable markings identifying the type, size, and electrical characteristics of cells and batteries. This includes designation for cells, monoblocs, modules, battery packs, and battery systems.
-
Dimensions: Specifications for cylindrical and prismatic cells, ensuring compatibility and interchangeability in industrial equipment.
-
Electrical Tests: Comprehensive tests to measure charging and discharging performance under various temperature conditions (20 °C, 5 °C, −18 °C), internal resistance (both AC and DC), capacity retention, recovery, and cycle endurance to ascertain battery reliability over its operational life.
-
Type Test Conditions: Defines sample sizes, testing sequences, and acceptance criteria necessary for type approval of NiMH cells and batteries used in industrial settings.
-
Storage and Endurance: Guidelines for testing battery stability during storage and after multiple charge-discharge cycles to guarantee long-term performance.
The standard incorporates informative annexes with examples of battery structure configurations (e.g., series and parallel arrangements) that illustrate practical implementations.
Applications
IEC 63115-1:2020-certified NiMH batteries are integral to a wide range of industrial applications that demand consistent, high-performance secondary power sources:
-
Telecommunications: Power backup and energy storage systems supporting network reliability and avoiding service interruptions.
-
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS): Ensuring seamless power during outages for critical industrial and commercial equipment.
-
Electrical Energy Storage Systems: Facilitating grid management, load balancing, and renewable energy integration.
-
Utility Switching & Emergency Power: Providing reliable power where rapid response and safety are essential.
-
Motive Power in Industrial Vehicles: Supplying energy for forklift trucks, golf carts, automated guided vehicles, trains, and marine vehicles (excluding road vehicles), where durable, rechargeable power sources reduce downtime and maintenance.
By adhering to IEC 63115-1, manufacturers and users can ensure that NiMH batteries meet international safety, quality, and performance benchmarks suitable for rigorous industrial environments.
Related Standards
IEC 63115-1 references and interacts with other International Electrotechnical Commission standards to provide comprehensive guidance for specialized applications:
-
IEC 62675: Covers test conditions and requirements for cells used in special applications, which take precedence over IEC 63115-1 when conflicts arise.
-
IEC 61951 Series: Applies to nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries, useful for broader battery technology comparisons.
-
IEC 61434: Provides guidelines on battery electrical performance testing for various industrial uses.
Adherence to IEC 63115-1 alongside relevant complementary standards ensures robust standardization for NiMH cells and batteries.
