IEC 63241-2-19:2025 applies to jointers. This document is to be used in conjunction with the first edition of IEC 63241-1:2023. The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63241-2-19:2025 is a specialized international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the dust measurement procedures specific to hand-held jointers. This standard is part 2-19 of the broader IEC 63241 series, which addresses dust measurement requirements for electric motor-operated tools. It complements the general requirements outlined in IEC 63241-1:2023 and focuses exclusively on jointers used in woodworking.
The standard outlines a detailed method for testing dust emission levels when operating jointers under controlled conditions. Its goal is to enhance safety by accurately measuring dust released during use, given the health risks associated with wood dust inhalation. IEC 63241-2-19:2025 helps manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies ensure compliance with dust emission limits and test consistency worldwide.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
This standard applies specifically to hand-held jointers equipped with disc cutters intended for cutting slots or grooves in wood-based materials like particleboard. -
Test Conditions and Setup
The document specifies precise operating conditions for testing, including the use of standardized particleboard (density ~610 kg/m³, bending strength 11.0 N/mm²) of fixed dimensions. Testing involves cutting 15 grooves at 12 mm depth across the workpiece surface while maintaining stable feed force and other conditions to simulate real-world use. -
Test Procedure
The measurement procedure mandates positioning the tool, workpiece, and operator in a defined orientation as illustrated in the standard. Testing for dust emission is conducted over a cycle lasting up to 10 minutes or extended if the required grooves are not completed. Use of a new disc cutter for each test run is required to maintain consistency. -
Instrumentation and Reporting
The standard refers to IEC 63241-1:2023 for instrumentation requirements and details the information to be reported. Additional reporting includes any extension needed beyond 10 minutes to complete the test grooves, ensuring transparency and reliability of results. -
Safety and Compliance
Adopting the standard aids manufacturers in designing safer jointers with reduced dust emissions, contributing to occupational health and safety improvements in woodworking environments.
Applications
-
Tool Manufacturers
Manufacturers of hand-held jointers utilize IEC 63241-2-19 to design and verify tools that comply with international dust emission standards, improving product safety and market acceptance. -
Testing Laboratories
Independent testing organizations apply the prescribed dust measurement procedure to evaluate jointer performance, helping certify equipment conformity and safety before market release. -
Regulatory Authorities
National and regional regulatory bodies use the standard as a reference for enforcing dust emission limits in power tools, protecting workers from respiratory hazards linked to wood dust exposure. -
Occupational Health Programs
Workshop managers and safety professionals employ the standard’s requirements to select tools that minimize dust emission, enhancing workplace air quality and reducing health risks.
