IEC 63241-3-9: 2025 applies to transportable mitre saws intended to cut wood or wood-based materials. This document is to be used in conjunction with the first edition of IEC 63241-1:2023. This document supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 63241-1, so as to convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for transportable mitre saws. Where a particular subclause of IEC 63241-1 is not mentioned in this document, that subclause applies as far as reasonable. Where this document states "addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant text in IEC 63241-1 is to be adapted accordingly. The following print types are used: - requirements: in roman type; - test specifications: in italic type; - notes: in small roman type. The terms defined in Clause 3 are printed in bold typeface. Subclauses, notes, tables and figures which are additional to those in IEC 63241-1 are numbered starting from 101. NOTE The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment manufacturers and testing organizations can need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 36 months from the date of publication.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63241-3-9:2025 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies dust measurement procedures tailored specifically for transportable mitre saws. This part of the IEC 63241 series supplements the general requirements outlined in IEC 63241-1:2023, focusing on particularities related to mitre saws designed for cutting wood and wood-based materials such as particleboard.
The standard ensures manufacturers and testing organizations have a clear framework to evaluate dust emissions, promoting workplace safety and environmental compliance. It defines test conditions, instrumentation, and reporting requirements to measure airborne dust generated during the operation of transportable mitre saws.
Key Topics
-
Scope: Targets transportable mitre saws intended primarily for cutting wood or wood-based materials including particleboard conforming to standards like EN 312 P2, ISO 16893 P-FN REG, and ANSI A208.1 Grade M-S.
-
Test Procedures:
- Includes detailed operating conditions covering type of material, thickness, and dimensions of workpieces.
- Specifies saw blade conditions, speed settings, and forces applied during testing.
- Mandates a fixed number of test cuts-50 cuts for non-sliding mitre saws or 40 cuts for sliding models-to simulate typical usage.
- Requires mitre and bevel angles both set to 0° to standardize cuts.
-
Instrumentation Requirements: Adheres to measurement specifications from IEC 63241-1:2023, ensuring consistency in dust sampling and analysis.
-
Reporting: Requires comprehensive documentation, including any extensions to the test cycle time if the cut number cannot be completed within the standard 10-minute period.
-
Definitions: Clarifies terms specific to mitre saws, such as the saw unit, table top, plunging and sliding actions, and angles for compound cuts.
-
Operating Conditions Summary: Presented in Table 101 of the standard, including:
- Workpiece density (~610 kg/m³),
- Strength characteristics,
- Material thickness (19 ± 1 mm),
- Width related to 2/3 of maximum horizontal cutting capacity (max 200 mm).
Applications
-
Manufacturer Compliance: Enables producers of transportable mitre saws to meet international safety and environmental standards by providing validated dust emission testing protocols.
-
Workplace Safety: Helps businesses ensure that mitre saw operation aligns with occupational health guidelines by quantifying dust exposure, critical for preventing respiratory issues related to wood dust.
-
Product Testing & Certification: Supports third-party testing laboratories with a harmonized methodology to assess saw dust emissions, facilitating product certification and market acceptance globally.
-
Standardization of Testing Methods: Provides a unified approach for equipment manufacturers and testing bodies to assess dust emissions under controlled, reproducible conditions, increasing test result reliability.
-
Design Guidance: Supplies insights into dust control effectiveness in mitre saw designs, encouraging innovation in dust collection systems and mitigation technologies.

Practical Value
Adoption of IEC 63241-3-9:2025 will streamline dust emission testing for transportable mitre saws, providing:
- Consistent dust measurement protocols ensuring fair product comparison and regulatory compliance.
- Improved health and safety outcomes by enforcing dust control evaluation at the design and manufacturing stages.
- Clear guidance for transitional periods, allowing manufacturers and testing bodies adequate time (recommended 36 months post-publication) to adapt to the updated requirements.
- A technical foundation for ongoing innovation in dust extraction and mitigation technologies for power tools.
By aligning with IEC 63241-3-9:2025, stakeholders can enhance environmental stewardship, worker protection, and product safety in the woodworking and construction tool markets.
