IEC 63278-1:2023 defines the structure of a standardized digital representation of an asset, called Asset Administration Shell (AAS). The Asset Administration Shell gives uniform access to information and services. The purpose of the Asset Administration Shell is to enable two or more software applications to exchange information and to mutually use the information that has been exchanged in a trusted and secure way. This document focuses on Asset Administration Shells representing assets of manufacturing enterprises including products produced by those enterprises and the full hierarchy of industrial equipment. It defines the related structures, information, and services. The Asset Administration Shell applies to: any type of industrial process (discrete manufacturing, continuous process, batch process, hybrid production); any industrial sector applying industrial-process measurement, control and automation; the entire life cycle of assets from idea to end of life treatment; assets which are physical, digital, or intangible entities.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 63278-1:2023 establishes the structure for the Asset Administration Shell (AAS), a standardized digital representation of assets for industrial applications. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this international standard defines how assets-ranging from individual equipment to complete production systems-are digitally structured, described, and made accessible. The Asset Administration Shell is designed to enable seamless exchange of information between software applications in manufacturing environments, ensuring secure and trusted data usage throughout the entire asset life cycle.
The standard is intended for use across all types of industrial processes, including discrete, continuous, batch, and hybrid production, and is relevant to any industrial sector applying automation, measurement, and control technologies. IEC 63278-1:2023 applies to physical, digital, and intangible assets and supports the complete life cycle from planning through end-of-life.
Key Topics
- Asset Administration Shell (AAS) Structure: Defines the conceptual and structural framework for representing any asset digitally. The AAS acts as a container of information and exposes uniform services and interfaces.
- Interoperability: Facilitates cross-company interoperability, making it possible for different software systems to integrate and exchange standardized asset information efficiently and securely.
- Information Management: Provides a uniform approach to managing and structuring asset-related data, essential for digital twins and advanced manufacturing practices.
- Life Cycle Coverage: Supports information exchange throughout every stage of an asset’s life, from ideation and design to operation, maintenance, and end-of-life treatment.
- Uniform Interfaces and Services: Specifies standardized access methods to asset information and services, supporting both manual and automated applications.
- Security Considerations: Highlights the need for information security and references IEC 62443 for securing industrial automation and control systems.
Applications
The practical value of IEC 63278-1:2023 lies in its broad applicability across industrial domains:
- Digital Twin Development: AAS serves as a digital twin enabler by providing a comprehensive and standardized way to represent, monitor, and interact with assets in real time.
- Asset Integration: Supports seamless integration of physical, digital, and intangible assets within manufacturing enterprises, enabling unified asset management.
- Cross-System Communication: Facilitates data exchange between design, engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain systems, reducing integration complexity and improving data consistency.
- Life Cycle Management: Enables consistent asset information availability across product and production life cycles, enhancing maintenance, upgrades, and recycling efforts.
- Autonomous Operations and AI: Provides a structured data foundation for implementing autonomous manufacturing systems and leveraging artificial intelligence in industrial settings.
- Compliance and Security: Works alongside industrial security standards to ensure both trusted interoperability and compliance in highly regulated environments.
