In IEC 80000-13:2008, names, symbols and definitions for quantities and units used in information science and technology are given. Where appropriate, conversion factors are also given. International Standard IEC 80000-13 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 25: Quantities and units, and their letter symbols in co-operation with ISO/TC 12. This standard cancels and replaces subclauses 3.8 and 3.9 of IEC 60027-2:2005. The only significant change is the addition of explicit definitions for some quantities.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 80000-13:2008 is a critical international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies quantities, units, names, symbols, and definitions used in the field of information science and technology. This standard provides a unified framework for expressing key information science quantities and their corresponding measurement units, facilitating consistency and interoperability across electrical, electronic, and information technology systems worldwide.
Prepared by IEC Technical Committee 25 in collaboration with ISO/TC 12, IEC 80000-13:2008 replaces certain parts of IEC 60027-2:2005 with updates including explicit definitions for some quantities. It also offers conversion factors where appropriate, supporting accurate measurement and communication of data within technical and scientific applications.
Key Topics
-
Standardized Names and Symbols
IEC 80000-13:2008 defines names and letter symbols for quantities common in information science, such as data size, information entropy, bit rate, and other key metrics. This standardization ensures clear communication among professionals and systems internationally. -
Quantities and Units Definition
The document provides detailed definitions to identify quantities within the International System of Quantities (ISQ), covering scalar, vectorial, or tensorial characteristics where relevant. This ensures precise, unambiguous usage throughout scientific and technical environments. -
Coherent SI Units and Non-SI Units
The standard prefers the use of coherent SI units alongside acknowledged non-SI units accepted by international metrology organizations. Units are arranged such that SI units are prioritized, with additional non-SI units presented for compatibility and conversion. -
Binary Multiples and Prefixes
Specific attention is given to the prefixes used for binary multiples (e.g., kibi, mebi, gibi) relevant in information technology, enabling a clear distinction from decimal multiples critical for storage, processing, and transmission measurements. -
Dimensionless Quantities and Measurement Uncertainty
IEC 80000-13 addresses dimensionless quantities used in information science, such as refractive index or ratios, indicating how their units are treated. It also describes the method of expressing measurement uncertainty in numeric values, reinforcing precision in data representation.
Applications
IEC 80000-13:2008 is essential for a broad range of practical applications in the information science and technology sector, including but not limited to:
-
Data Storage and Transmission
Defining units for information capacity (bits, bytes), data rates, and throughput to standardize how data metrics are quantified and compared. -
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Applying consistent measurement units for parameters in algorithms, data structures, and system performance analysis. -
Telecommunications
Harmonizing units to describe transmission properties, signal quality, and system performance in communication networks. -
Information Systems and Data Analytics
Facilitating consistent terminology and measurement standards for information processing, entropy calculations, and statistical data handling. -
Electrotechnical and Electronic Design
Aligning symbols and units in hardware design, embedded systems, and electronic instrumentation that handle digital information.
By utilizing IEC 80000-13, organizations can enhance clarity in documentation, improve interoperability of systems, and foster international cooperation in research and industrial development within information technologies.
