Specifies requirements for the manufacture and supply of axles for tractive and trailing stock of unalloyed and alloyed steels in accordance with table 1 and clause 4. In addition to this part of ISO 1005, the requirements of ISO 404 are applicable.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 1005-3:1982 - "Railway rolling stock material - Part 3: Axles for tractive and trailing stock - Quality requirements" defines quality, manufacturing and inspection requirements for steel axles used in locomotive (tractive) and trailing rolling stock. It covers permissible steel grades (unalloyed and alloyed), delivery heat-treatment conditions, required tests and acceptance criteria for soundness, microstructure and mechanical performance. The standard is intended to be used together with ISO 404 (general delivery requirements for steel).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and materials: Applies to axles manufactured from specified unalloyed (A1, A2) and alloyed (A3, A4) steel grades; steelmaking by open-hearth, electric-arc or basic oxygen processes is specified, with other processes allowed by agreement.
- Heat-treatment and delivery conditions: Defines delivery conditions such as untreated, normalized (N) or quenched & tempered (T). Heat-treatment requirements and precautions to avoid defects (e.g., flaking/hydrogen cracking) are specified.
- Microstructure and metallography: Normalized or quenched-and-tempered axles must have a uniform microstructure; grain size (per ISO 643) shall not be coarser than 5.
- Chemical composition and product checks: Maximum element contents are given for cast analysis; optional product (check) analysis and allowable deviations are defined.
- Mechanical properties and tests: Mechanical performance after heat treatment is specified; required tests include tensile and Charpy impact tests, with provision for ultrasonic, magnetic-particle and macro-examination (sulphur prints) for soundness (ISO 5948 referenced).
- Manufacture and finishing: Permitted forming routes (forging, rolling, or rolling + forging), limits on ingot/axle cross-sectional areas at various stages, straightening and stress-relief practices, and machining/degree-of-finish definitions (rough-forged, rough-machined, half-finished, finished).
- Inspection, acceptance and marking: Defines batching, unit of test, purchaser/inspector responsibilities, required stamping of manufacturer mark, cast number, steel grade/heat-treatment symbol and date. Prohibits unauthorized repairs (welding, metallization, etc.) that would cause batch rejection.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Railway vehicle manufacturers, axle manufacturers and steel producers, procurement/specification engineers, quality and inspection personnel, and railway authorities.
- Practical value: Ensures consistent axle material quality, mechanical performance and soundness for safe service on locomotives and stock; establishes clear acceptance testing, manufacturing controls and marking for traceability.
- Use cases: Specifying axle orders, setting acceptance inspection regimes, supplier qualification, and aligning production heat-treatment and inspection procedures with international practice.
