ISO 10058-2:2008 specifies traditional (“wet process”) methods for the chemical analysis of magnesite and dolomite refractory products and raw materials.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10058-2:2008 specifies wet chemical (traditional “wet process”) methods for the chemical analysis of magnesite and dolomite refractory products and raw materials. It is published by ISO as an alternative to X‑ray fluorescence (XRF) and forms Part 2 of the ISO 10058 series. The standard defines accepted laboratory procedures, measurement ranges, and reporting requirements for routine compositional analysis used in refractory quality control and materials testing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Suitable for magnesite and dolomite refractory products; analytical ranges are given as mass percentages (examples below).
- Component determination: Procedures are provided for a set of oxides and loss on ignition (LOI), including:
- SiO2: molybdenum blue method; combined coagulation/dehydration + molybdenum blue for higher contents
- Al2O3: complexometric titration using CyDTA (EDTA analogue) and back‑titration with Zn, with indicator correction for other oxides
- Fe2O3: reduction and colorimetric determination using 1,10‑phenanthroline
- TiO2, MnO, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, Cr2O3, ZrO2 (xylenol orange), P2O5 (molybdenum blue), LOI
- Na2O and K2O by flame photometry / flame spectrophotometry where applicable
- Analytical ranges (percentage by mass, after LOI): examples from the standard
- SiO2: 0.1 to 10%; MgO: 30 to 99.9%; CaO: 0.01 to 60%
- Al2O3, Fe2O3: 0.05–10% and 0.01–10% respectively; others (TiO2, MnO, Na2O, K2O, Cr2O3, ZrO2, P2O5) covered in narrow ranges down to 0.01%
- Quality controls and reporting: Blank tests, calibration graphs, aliquot procedures and calculation formulas are specified to ensure accuracy and reproducibility.
- Relationship to other methods: Provides an established laboratory alternative to instrumental methods such as XRF, FAAS and ICP‑AES.
Applications and users
ISO 10058-2:2008 is intended for:
- Quality control laboratories at refractory producers and raw‑material suppliers
- Materials testing and R&D labs evaluating magnesite and dolomite refractories
- Laboratories without access to XRF or ICP equipment who require validated wet‑chemical protocols
- Certification bodies and purchasers who require standardized analytical reports
Practical uses include batch release testing, incoming raw material inspection, failure analysis and research into refractory compositions and performance.
