ISO 10059-2:2003 specifies a method for the determination of the cold compressive strength of dense shaped refractory products as an alternative to that described in ISO 10059-1:1992.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 10059-2:2003 (cold compressive strength, test with packing)
ISO 10059-2:2003 specifies a laboratory method for determining the cold compressive strength of dense, shaped refractory products using a test with packing (single-sheet interlayers). It is presented as an alternative, routine/quality-control method to ISO 10059-1:1992 (referee test without packing). The procedure defines sample sizes, conditioning, test setup, loading rate and reporting so results can be used for acceptance testing and production control of refractory bricks and shapes.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Routine determination of cold compressive strength for dense shaped refractories (true porosity < 45% per ISO 5017). Not intended to replace the referee method (ISO 10059-1) for ultimate values.
- Test pieces: Cylinders or cubes (typical sizes: 50 mm ±2 mm height/diameter, 50 mm or 75 mm cubes, or half standard brick). Minimum recommended number of pieces: five; sampling per agreed plan.
- Preparation and conditioning: Cut/cored so load direction matches forming pressure where known. Check parallelism/perpendicularity limits (difference ≤ 2% of height). Dry to constant mass at 110 °C ± 5 °C, cool and protect from moisture.
- Packing material: Single sheet of cellulose fibre board (paperboard/cardboard) 3–7 mm thick placed between each load-bearing face and platens. Board thickness/density must be measured and reported; board must extend at least 12.7 mm beyond the specimen edges.
- Apparatus: Mechanical/hydraulic compression machine with load-measuring accuracy within ±2% and the ability to increase stress at 1.0 MPa/s ± 0.1 MPa/s. Platen seating must compensate small misalignments; ancillary adapters with spherical seating are allowed for small specimens. Vernier callipers per ISO 3599 for dimensional measurement.
- Procedure & calculation: Increase load until failure, record maximum load Fmax. Compressive strength σ = Fmax / Ao (Ao = mean initial cross-sectional area). Report strength to three significant figures.
- Test report: Must include sample ID, reference to ISO 10059-2, individual and mean results, specimen sizes/locations, board thickness/density, deviations and anomalies, testing lab and date.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: Refractory manufacturers, QA/QC laboratories, materials testing laboratories, procurement and inspection engineers in steel, cement, glass and high-temperature process industries.
- Practical uses: Routine quality control, batch acceptance testing, production monitoring, supplier verification and contract testing where a standardized, reproducible cold crushing strength method with packing is required.
