ISO 10069-1:2008 specifies the dimensions, in millimetres, of elastomer pressure springs intended for use in press tools, and the diameters, in millimetres, of counterbores for these pressure springs. It also gives information concerning materials and their hardness, and specifies the designation of springs that are in accordance with its requirements, together with the marking of their packages. Examples of suitable applications are given in Annex A. Dimensions of accessories (spring collars and pilot pins) are specified in ISO 10069-2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10069-1:2008, "Tools for pressing - Elastomer pressure springs - Part 1: General specification," defines standardized dimensions, materials and marking for elastomer pressure springs used in press tools. The standard specifies spring dimensions and counterbore diameters in millimetres, gives material and hardness guidance, provides designation and packaging marking rules, and includes illustrative application examples (Annex A). Dimensions of accessories (spring collars and pilot pins) are covered in ISO 10069-2.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dimensions and geometry: Detailed dimensional tables and figures (Figures 1, 2 and Tables 1–3) specify free and compressed diameters and lengths for elastomer pressure springs and the corresponding counterbore diameters. Surface texture indication was updated in line with ISO 1302:2002.
- Materials and hardness: Two elastomer families are specified:
- Chloroprene rubber (CR) - nominal 70 Shore A
- Polyurethane rubber (PUR) - nominal 90 Shore A Both materials are rated for temperature resistance up to approximately 80 °C.
- Load and compression data: Tables provide values of load (F) and maximum compression (difference between free and fully compressed lengths) for the standardized spring sizes.
- Designation and marking: Standardized designation format (example: Elastomer pressure spring ISO 10069-1 - 16 × 20 - CR) and mandatory package marking (diameter, length, material) ensure unambiguous identification.
- Installation notes: Annex A includes recommended uses and mounting guidance; lubrication recommendations note that mineral oils or grease are preferred for PUR springs.
- Accessories: Dimensions for collars and pilot pins are referenced in ISO 10069-2.
Applications and practical value
ISO 10069-1 is directly applicable to manufacturers, tool designers and maintenance teams working with press tools and stamping equipment that require controlled elastic support or pressure-examples include:
- Die and punch assemblies in metal stamping and forming
- Press-fit and assembly tooling where compliant force and rebound are needed
- Tooling retrofit and spares procurement to ensure interchangeability
Benefits include simplified sourcing, consistent performance (load/compression behaviour), and clearer communication between toolmakers, OEMs and suppliers.
Who should use this standard
- Tooling and die designers specifying elastomer springs for press tools
- Manufacturers and suppliers of elastomer pressure springs
- Maintenance and purchasing teams standardizing spare parts
- QA engineers verifying compliance with dimensional and marking requirements
