This document specifies the default (implicit) tolerances for indication in the ISO 10110 series, which standardizes drawing indications for optical elements and systems.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10110-11:2025 (Optics and photonics - Preparation of drawings for optical elements and systems - Part 11: Non-toleranced data) specifies the default (implicit) tolerances to be used when drawing indications are missing from ISO 10110 series drawings. These defaults are intended as loose fabrication requirements that promote consistent interpretation, fabrication and inspection of finished optical elements when explicit tolerances are not supplied.
Key rules from the standard include:
- Defaults in Table 1 apply to the finished optical element and depend on part size (diagonal dimension ranges).
- An indication code with no values (e.g., "4/ ") counts as missing and triggers defaults.
- A dash (-) after a code means no default applies for that property.
- For surface form, defaults only apply when the entire indication (code and values) is missing; see ISO 10110-5 for testing area rules.
- When defaults are used, verification by measurement is not required.
Key Topics
The document defines defaults across many drawing properties (examples taken from Table 1):
- Part diameter/length and thickness: size-dependent defaults for dimensional tolerances.
- Angle deviation: default angular tolerances for prisms and plane-parallel elements.
- Chamfer width: recommended protective chamfer ranges referenced to ISO 10110-1.
- Material properties: default principal refractive index and Abbe number variations, and stress birefringence (in accordance with ISO 10110-18).
- Material imperfections: bubbles, inclusions, homogeneity and striae defaults (per ISO 10110-18 and transitional rules for ISO 10110-4/ISO 12123).
- Surface properties: surface form, centring, surface imperfections, texture for optically effective and non-effective surfaces, and coating default (explicitly defined as uncoated unless specified).
The standard documents how defaults vary with part size and includes transitional rules (e.g., striae defaults change based on drawing date and adoption of ISO 12123).
Applications
ISO 10110-11:2025 is used by optical designers, drawing preparers, manufacturers and quality teams to:
- Ensure consistent interpretation of drawings when specific tolerances are omitted.
- Reduce ambiguity during procurement and fabrication of optical elements.
- Provide a baseline for inspection and acceptance when explicit requirements are absent.
Practical application advice from the standard: always indicate critical, application-specific properties (for example, effective aperture and laser irradiation damage threshold must be specified explicitly; no defaults are provided).
