Abstract
Overview - ISO 10112:1991 (Damping materials, complex modulus)
ISO 10112:1991 specifies a graphical presentation and preferred nomenclature for the complex modulus of viscoelastic vibration damping materials. It covers how to present and interpret frequency‑ and temperature‑dependent modulus data (real/storage and imaginary/loss components) for materials that are linear, homogeneous, isotropic and thermorheologically simple. The standard applies to several moduli (shear, Young’s E, bulk K, longitudinal wave propagation modulus, and Lame modulus). Annex A is informative.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Nomenclature and definitions: preferred parameters, symbols and definitions for complex modulus, storage (G′) and loss (G″) components, and loss factor (tan δ).
- Thermorheological simplicity: requirement that modulus dependence on temperature and frequency can be collapsed to a single variable - the reduced frequency (fR) via a temperature shift function (aT).
- Graphical formats:
- Reduced frequency plot (temperature‑frequency‑reduced frequency nomogram) with logarithmic axes for G′, G″ and loss factor.
- Inverted‑“U” plot: loss factor versus real modulus to show damping behaviour across modulus range.
- Data quality checks: recommended plots (e.g., log G″ vs log G) to reveal scatter and inconsistencies.
- Temperature shift function analysis: recommendations to plot aT, its slope d(lg aT)/dT and apparent activation energy to validate shifting and detect anomalies.
- Analytical representation: guidance for providing analytical models of aT and complex modulus for computational use, with a clear caution against inappropriate extrapolation.
- Scope limits: standard is restricted to linear behaviour and internal material damping; it explicitly excludes damping due to joint slip, plastic deformation, air pumping, acoustic radiation, eddy currents, etc.
Applications - practical value
ISO 10112 is used to:
- Present and compare viscoelastic damping data consistently across temperature and frequency.
- Support material selection and characterization for vibration control in automotive, aerospace, civil engineering, electronics and consumer products.
- Provide standardized inputs for finite element and dynamic response analyses that require temperature‑dependent damping properties.
- Improve communication between test laboratories, material scientists, design engineers and standards committees by using common symbols and plots.
Who should use this standard
- Materials testing laboratories and manufacturers of damping materials.
- Mechanical and acoustic engineers working on vibration mitigation and dynamic modelling.
- R&D teams characterizing viscoelastic polymers, adhesives and constrained layer damping systems.
- Standards developers and technical committees involved in vibration and shock.
