ISO 10123:2013 specifies a method for the determination of the shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives used for retaining cylindrical assemblies, pin-and-collar type, or for locking and sealing threaded fasteners. This test method can also be used for other adhesives.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10123:2013 specifies a laboratory test method for determining the shear strength of anaerobic-curing liquid adhesives using pin-and-collar specimens. The standard describes specimen geometry, preparation, apparatus (including a universal testing machine complying with ISO 7500-1), test procedure, and reporting requirements. Primarily intended for ranking and quality control of adhesives, ISO 10123:2013 is widely used in adhesive testing and evaluation of retaining and locking products (cylindrical assemblies and threaded fasteners).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: Measure the maximum load required to shear the adhesive joint between a metal pin and a slip collar, then calculate static shear strength τ = F / S (F = maximum load in N; S = bond area in mm²).
- Specimen geometry: Typical pin diameter 20 mm, collar inside diameter 20 mm, collar width 18.00 ± 0.05 mm, surface finish 0.8–1.6 µm. Effective bond length is specified (16 mm).
- Apparatus:
- Universal testing machine, class 1, per ISO 7500-1.
- Hardened steel specimen support and optional adaptors for using a tensile testing machine in compression (Annex A).
- Preparation:
- Clean and degrease metal parts; store at (23 ± 2) °C before assembly.
- Assemble ≥5 specimens per test. Apply adhesive to pin and collar, slip collar on within 6 s with helicoidal movement, cure per manufacturer’s instructions.
- Test procedure:
- Load specimen in support; apply compressive load at 1–2 mm/min crosshead speed.
- Record maximum load and compute shear strength.
- Reporting: Include full adhesive identification, substrate material and prep, application and curing conditions, conditioning, number of specimens, crosshead speed, average maximum load and shear strength with standard deviations.
- Notes: The method is intended for quality control and ranking; it does not necessarily predict in-service performance nor supply numerical design data.
Applications
- Quality control of anaerobic retaining adhesives used in pin-and-collar assemblies.
- Comparative laboratory testing for product development or batch acceptance.
- Evaluation of adhesives for locking and sealing threaded fasteners and other cylindrical assemblies.
- Component suppliers, adhesive manufacturers, and testing laboratories use this method to verify adhesive performance under controlled shear loading.
Who should use this standard
- Adhesive manufacturers and formulators
- Mechanical and automotive component manufacturers (retaining rings, bearings, threaded fasteners)
- Independent materials testing laboratories and R&D teams
- Quality assurance professionals responsible for adhesive acceptance testing
