Specifies the essential performance characteristics of reader-printers designed for viewing and making hard copies from microfilm with a maximum width of 35 mm, whether in microfilm strips or in roll form, in open reels, cartridges or cassettes, microfiches, jackets and image cards. Establishes minimum criteria for the hard copy prints produced by reader-printers based on the use of microtest charts ISO No. 1 and ISO No. 2 or from microforms with a specified minimum quality, either an original or a duplicate. Applies to reader-printers with a magnification less than or equal to 50:1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10197:1993 - Micrographics: Reader‑printers for transparent microforms - Characteristics defines essential performance and safety characteristics for reader‑printers used to view and produce hard copies from transparent microforms (microfilm up to 35 mm, microfiche, jackets, image cards). The standard applies to combined reader-and-printer devices with magnifications up to 50:1 and establishes minimum criteria for screen performance, image quality and printer output using ISO test charts No. 1 and No. 2 or microforms of specified minimum quality.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and device types: Covers reader‑printers (device that serves as both reader and printer); excludes specialized colour or non‑standard microforms and not necessarily enlarger‑printers.
- Magnification: Nominal magnification shall be within ±5% of manufacturer’s value; multiple lenses must be clearly marked.
- Image resolution & test charts: Hard‑copy and screen resolution are verified using ISO No. 1 and No. 2 microtest charts; minimum resolution levels depend on magnification.
- Image distortion limits: Curvilinear distortion < 0.5%; geometric distortion < 2%.
- Screen luminance & contrast: Minimum luminance across the useful area 35 cd/m² and center minimum 140 cd/m²; screen contrast (luminance ratio) ≥ 10. For front‑projection readers, luminance variation max ratio 5; special ratios for very large or rear‑projection screens are specified.
- Focus and image alignment: Accessible focus control; printed image must match screen image within ±4%; focus during printing must equal viewing focus.
- Printer / paper requirements: Supports ISO 216 paper sizes (or agreed alternatives); paper handling, roll cut tolerances and paper marking properties specified; prints should be available within 30 seconds of starting the print cycle.
- Thermal and safety limits: Film‑gate temperature ≤ 72 °C after 60 minutes; case temperatures, electrical safety and fire/toxicity requirements conform to IEC/ISO safety standards.
- Usability and controls: Readily accessible, clearly labelled controls; multilingual or ISO/IEC symbols permitted.
- Operational characteristics: Paper alignment tolerance (≤ 5 mm/m), noise limits, handling instructions and supply labelling (chemical safety/expiry).
Applications and intended users
ISO 10197 is practical for:
- Archives, libraries and records management teams requiring reliable viewing and hard‑copy reproduction of microforms.
- Manufacturers and designers of micrographic equipment for product design, testing and compliance.
- QA/test laboratories performing performance verification against international micrographics criteria.
- Procurement and technical specification authors who need standardized acceptance criteria for reader‑printers.
This standard supports consistent image quality, repeatable hard‑copy output and safer operation of microform reader‑printers in preservation, legal, engineering and administrative workflows.
