ISO 10263-2:2009 specifies a uniform test method to determine performance levels of operator enclosure panel–type air filters used to filter the air entering an earth‑moving machine operator enclosure with a powered fresh air system.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10263-2:2009 - "Earth‑moving machinery - Operator enclosure environment - Part 2: Air filter element test method" specifies a uniform laboratory test method for evaluating panel‑type air filter elements that clean fresh air supplied to operator enclosures (cabins) of earth‑moving machines. The standard defines test shrouds, instrumentation, test dusts and environmental conditions to determine filter resistance, dust holding capacity, particulate removal efficiency and sealing characteristics for powered fresh‑air systems.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Applies to panel‑type operator enclosure filters; other element types refer to ISO 5011.
- Test equipment: Detailed test shroud and setup (blower, restrictor plates, piezometer, absolute filter housing, dust injectors and metering device).
- Test dust: Uses standard Arizona test dust grades ISO 12103‑1 A2 (fine) and A4 (coarse); recommended concentrations (practical zero‑visibility condition) are specified (1 g/m3 for A2 and A4).
- Dust metering accuracy: Average delivery within ±5% of desired rate and instantaneous deviation ≤5%.
- Environmental conditions: Air flow corrected to standard 25 °C at 100 kPa; test air temperature (24 ± 8) °C and relative humidity (50 ± 15)%.
- Absolute filter specification: Fibreglass medium, minimum thickness 12.7 mm, fibre diameter 0.76–1.27 µm, density and moisture absorption limits, and face velocity limit (≤ 50 m/min) to protect medium integrity.
- Operational points: Pressure‑drop tests at minimum three flow points (80%, 100%, 120% of rated flow); dust mixing chamber inlet velocity minimum 6 m/s.
- Efficiency calculation: Filter efficiency is derived from measured mass increases of the test element and the absolute filter (clause 4.2.8). An alternate method with specific procedural cautions is provided in Annex B to avoid overestimation.
- Reporting: Test report template and required data fields are provided (Annex A).
Applications and Users
ISO 10263-2:2009 is used by:
- Filter manufacturers for product design verification and performance claims.
- OEMs and equipment manufacturers to select or validate enclosure filters for cabins of excavators, loaders, bulldozers and other earth‑moving machinery.
- Independent test laboratories conducting standardized filter evaluations.
- Maintenance engineers and procurement teams requiring objective filter performance data for specifications and lifecycle planning.
- Regulatory and safety teams assessing operator environment protection and compliance.
Practical applications include validating in‑cab air quality controls, optimizing filter service intervals, comparing filter technologies, and supporting HVAC and pressurization performance testing for operator enclosures.
