ISO 10265:2008 specifies minimum performance criteria and test methods to enable uniform assessment of the service, secondary and parking brake systems of crawler machines. It is applicable to self-propelled crawler machines, as defined in ISO 6165 including derivative earth-moving machines with rubber tracks, with a maximum design speed of 20 km/h or less. This International Standard does not cover those machines that fall under ISO 17063 or wheeled machines equipped with over-the-tyre tracks. Crawler machines with maximum design speed greater than 20 km/h conform to ISO 3450.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10265:2008 - Earth‑moving machinery - Crawler machines - Performance requirements and test procedures for braking systems specifies minimum performance criteria and standardized test methods for the service, secondary and parking brake systems of self‑propelled crawler machines (including rubber‑tracked derivatives) with a maximum design speed ≤ 20 km/h. It enables uniform assessment of braking performance, test reporting and machine labelling for manufacturers, test houses and regulatory/compliance stakeholders.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Required brake systems: every machine must have a service, a secondary and a parking brake (components may be shared provided single failures still meet performance criteria).
- Failure tolerance: a single component failure must not reduce stopping capability below the defined secondary brake performance.
- Control forces: maximum operator control forces are specified (e.g., finger grasp 20 N, hand grasp up to 400 N upwards, foot pedal up to 600 N) to ensure realistic human‑machine interaction during tests.
- Exhaustible energy warning: brake systems that rely on exhaustible energy (e.g., pneumatic or hydraulic accumulators) must include an audible/visible warning before energy falls below critical levels.
- Electronic control systems: electronic brake controls must achieve a manufacturer‑defined safe state through risk assessment; compliance with ISO 15998 is referenced.
- Test procedures and conditions: defined level test course characteristics, alternate static test options, instrumentation, towing/pulling arrangement and machine preparation rules to ensure repeatable results.
- Performance tests: service and secondary stop tests, parking‑hold tests, analytical/component‑level verification, slope capability (brake slope capability relates to stopping/holding between specified slope limits).
- Documentation: requirements for machine instructions, labels and standardized test reports.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 10265 and why:
- OEMs / designers: to design and validate braking systems that meet minimum international performance criteria.
- Test laboratories & certification bodies: to conduct reproducible service, secondary and parking brake tests and produce compliant test reports.
- Fleet owners / procurement teams: to specify minimum braking performance in tenders and acceptance testing.
- Maintenance and safety engineers: to interpret brake system requirements, failure modes and warning‑device expectations.
- Regulators & inspectors: to harmonize enforcement and acceptance criteria for crawler‑type earth‑moving machinery.
Practical benefits include consistent safety benchmarks, clearer procurement specs, and improved comparability of braking performance across machines.
