Applies to earth-moving machines as given in ISO 6165. Specifies laboratory test procedures evaluating the limiting performance parameters. Fluid systems include engine, power train, fuel system, oil system, etc. The preferred test method is with the machine on a tilt platform or on a prepared slope. An alternative method is testing on a test bench. Annex A shows a model test report.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10266:1992, "Earth‑moving machinery - Determination of slope limits for machine fluid systems operation - Static test method," defines laboratory procedures for establishing the static slope capability of fluid systems on earth‑moving machines. The standard covers fluid systems such as engine, power train, fuel, lubrication and cooling systems, and specifies how to determine the maximum slopes (degrees) at which these systems can operate without malfunction or damage.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to earth‑moving machinery as given in ISO 6165 (basic vocabulary and machine classes); covers machines with standard mounted attachments.
- Preferred and alternative test methods:
- Preferred: machine placed on a tilt platform or prepared slope.
- Alternative: complete fluid system testing on a test bench.
- Machine orientations: Tests cover longitudinal (0° and 180°) and lateral (90° and 270°) orientations; additional orientations may be chosen depending on system layout.
- Definitions: Includes terms such as machine orientation, stabilized operating temperature, fluid system(s) and static slope capability.
- Test equipment & safety:
- Tilt platform or prepared slope, restraints, and instrumentation to monitor pressures, temperatures and slope.
- Safety measures, operator presence, and ROPS considerations.
- Measuring accuracy:
- Slope angle: ±2%
- Pressure: ±2%
- Temperature: ±1 °C
- Engine speed: ±2% of maximum
- Test procedure:
- Start with minimum manufacturer fluid levels (fuel full).
- Operate engine through speed range and fluid systems through max range until stabilized temperature (≤2 °C change/min).
- With engine at maximum speed, record system pressures/temperatures at 5‑minute intervals.
- Failure/acceptance criteria:
- Pressure drops below 90% of baseline, leaks, abnormal noises, or temperatures outside manufacturer recommendations indicate limit exceeded.
- Reporting: Annex A provides a model test report template for summarizing results.
Practical applications
- Validating machine design and fluid system layout for operation on slopes
- Establishing operator limits, product datasheets and safe‑use documentation
- Laboratory and field acceptance testing by OEMs, test labs and certification bodies
- R&D troubleshooting for fuel supply, lubrication and cooling on inclined machines
Who should use this standard
- OEM design and validation teams
- Test laboratories and certification agencies
- Safety engineers and field service teams
- Product managers preparing technical specifications and marketing materials
