This International Standard specifies the marks allowed to identify material and metric series on solid rivets for use in aerospace construction. It applies when reference is made to this International Standard in the product standard or definition document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10299:2000 specifies the permitted marks used to identify material and metric series on solid rivets for aerospace construction. The standard applies when it is referenced in a product standard or definition document and is intended to ensure consistent, legible marking that does not adversely affect rivet installation.
Key practical points in the standard include:
- Marks must be readable and located on the rivet head (manufacturer may choose the exact position, provided marking does not impair fitting).
- Material identification follows the symbols and placement rules given in the standard (see the standard tables). Only materials listed in ISO/TR 12198:1998 are covered.
- Metric-series identification uses a visible symbol (designed to be legible to the naked eye) and must not affect rivet performance during assembly.
- Additional marking or identification requirements (for example, colour coding) must be specified in the relevant product standard or definition document.
Key Topics
- Material identification: Symbols for aluminium alloys, corrosion-resistant steels, nickel alloys and titanium are defined in the standard tables. Some alloys require relief marks, others creux (depressed) marks or no marking as indicated.
- Metric-series marking: A dedicated symbol is shown so metric series can be identified visually after manufacture.
- Mark dimensions: The standard limits mark height or depth (see Table 2) to avoid weakening or interfering with rivet installation. Where a drilling dimple (amorce de perçage) is used, the permitted maximum diameter is Ø0.8 mm and maximum depth 0.2 mm.
- Traceability and quality: By standardising marks, ISO 10299:2000 supports component traceability, inspection, and quality control throughout manufacturing and maintenance.
Applications
ISO 10299:2000 is directly applicable to:
- Procurement specifications and supplier requirements for aerospace fasteners
- Manufacturing and marking procedures at rivet production facilities
- Incoming inspection criteria and visual checks during assembly
- Maintenance and repair operations to confirm rivet material and series without destructive testing
Adopting the standard helps ensure consistent identification of rivets, reduces inspection time, and improves documentation for airworthiness records.

For implementation, consult the full ISO 10299:2000 text and the applicable product or definition document to confirm any additional marking, colouration, or inspection requirements required for specific rivet families and aerospace assemblies.
