This part of ISO 10303 specifies the interpretation of the integrated resources to satisfy requirements for the representation of the product shape using three-dimensional wireframe models that are bounded by a set of connected edge sets. The following are within the scope of this part of ISO 10303: — the representation of wireframe models that are described by a graph of edges and vertices where the edges intersect only at their vertices; — the representation of a wireframe model by one or more connected edge sets that shall not overlap or intersect except at their vertices or edges; — points defined in a three-dimensional coordinate space; — curves, including b-splines, defined in a three-dimensional coordinate space; — the representation of a single wireframe model or an assembly of wireframe models. The following are outside the scope of this part of ISO 10303: — geometry defined in a two-dimensional coordinate space; — surface geometry; — solid geometry; — shell topology.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10303-501:2000 - Industrial automation systems and integration - Product data representation and exchange - Part 501: Application interpreted construct: Edge based wireframe - defines how to represent three-dimensional edge-based wireframe models for product shape description. It interprets integrated resources in the ISO 10303 family to provide a machine-readable, consistent representation of wireframe geometry bounded by connected edge sets. The part includes EXPRESS definitions, diagrams and validation functions to support interoperable 3D wireframe data exchange.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Edge and vertex graph model: wireframe models are represented as a graph of edges and vertices where edges intersect only at vertices.
- Connected edge sets: models may be described by one or more connected edge sets that must not overlap or intersect except at vertices or edges.
- 3D coordinate geometry: points and curves (including B-splines) are defined in a three-dimensional coordinate space.
- Assemblies and single models: supports representation of a single wireframe model or assemblies of wireframe models.
- Explicit exclusions: the standard does not cover 2D geometry, surface geometry, solid geometry, or shell topology.
- Formal artifacts: includes EXPRESS short listings, EXPRESS-G diagrams, computer-interpretable listings and validation functions (for example, valid_wireframe_edge_curve and valid_wireframe_vertex_point) to aid implementation and conformance.
Applications
- CAD data exchange between different systems when product geometry is represented as wireframes.
- Legacy model translation where 3D wireframe representations must be archived or migrated.
- Interoperability layers in PLM, manufacturing, shipbuilding, aerospace or automotive workflows that rely on neutral product data formats.
- Validation and conformance testing of wireframe datasets through EXPRESS-based rules and functions.
Who Uses This Standard
- CAD/CAE software developers implementing ISO 10303 application interpreted constructs.
- PLM and data-exchange integrators responsible for neutral file formats and long-term archival of product geometry.
- System integrators and engineers working with wireframe-dominant models or interoperable model exchanges.
- Standards and compliance teams implementing EXPRESS schemas and validation logic.
Related Standards
- ISO 10303 series (application interpreted constructs and integrated resources) - see referenced parts such as ISO 10303-41, -42, -43, and -202.
- EXPRESS language and EXPRESS-G diagrams (ISO 10303-11) for schema and diagrammatic representation.
