This document specifies an index test method for the determination of the tensile properties of geosynthetics (polymeric, glass and metallic), using a wide-width strip. This document is applicable to most geosynthetics, including woven geotextiles, nonwoven geotextiles, geocomposites, knitted geotextiles, geonets, geomats and metallic products. It is also applicable to geogrids and similar open-structure geotextiles, but specimen dimensions will possibly need to be altered. It is not applicable to polymeric or bituminous geosynthetic barriers, but it is applicable to clay geosynthetic barriers. This document specifies a tensile test method that covers the measurement of tensile force, elongation characteristics and includes procedures for the calculation of secant stiffness, maximum load per unit width and strain at maximum force. Singular points on the tensile force-extension curve are also indicated. Procedures for measuring the tensile properties of both conditioned and wet specimens are included in this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10319:2024 - Geosynthetics - Wide-width tensile test is the fourth edition of the international index method for measuring tensile properties of geosynthetics using a wide-width strip. Published by ISO in 2024, this standard defines how to determine tensile force, elongation behavior and derived parameters (secant stiffness, maximum load per unit width, strain at maximum force), and it covers testing of conditioned and wet specimens. It applies to most geosynthetics (polymeric, glass and metallic), including woven and nonwoven geotextiles, geocomposites, geonets, geomats, knitted products and certain metallic meshes. Note: it excludes polymeric or bituminous geosynthetic barriers but includes clay geosynthetic barriers.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Specimen geometry and gauge length: Nominal gauge length is normally 60 mm (30 mm on each side of specimen centre); adjustments allowed for open-structure products (e.g., geogrids).
- Measured parameters: Tensile force, tensile strain (defined on true gauge length), tensile strength (force per unit width), secant tensile stiffness, strain at maximum force, and identification of singular points/peaks on force–strain curves.
- Pre-tension and test origin: Pre-tension force = 1% of expected maximum tensile force; elongation at pre-tension sets the strain origin.
- Test speed and strain rate: Typical strain rate is (20 ± 5) % per minute. For low-strain products (≤ 5 %) a reduced speed is used so failure occurs in (30 ± 5) s.
- Clamping and grips: Suitable jaws include compressive hydraulic jaws and capstan grips; capstan mounting may use S- or B-shaped wrapping to avoid grip slippage.
- Extensometry: Extension measured by an extensometer tracking two reference points on the specimen symmetry axis.
- Conditioning: Atmospheric conditioning per ISO 554; procedures for wet specimens and for testing at elevated or low temperatures (Annex A) are included.
- Normative references: ISO 10318-1 (terms), ISO 9862 (sampling), ISO 7500-1 (machine calibration), ISO 9863-1 (thickness), ISO 10321 (seams), ISO 3696 and ISO 554 among others.
Applications and users
ISO 10319:2024 is used for:
- Quality control and acceptance testing of geosynthetic production
- Product specification and performance comparison
- Design input for civil/infrastructure projects (reinforcement, drainage, erosion control, landfill liners where clay barriers apply)
- R&D and material development for geosynthetics Typical users include manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, geotechnical and civil engineers, specifiers, product certification bodies and researchers.
