ISO 10349-13:2002 specifies a general test method for the determination of pH of solutions of photographic-grade chemicals to within plus or minus 0,1 pH units. This method is not intended to monitor the pH of formulated solutions used directly in photographic processing, e.g. developers.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10349-13:2002 - "Photography - Photographic-grade chemicals - Test methods - Part 13: Determination of pH" specifies a reproducible laboratory method to determine the pH of solutions of photographic‑grade chemicals with an accuracy of ±0.1 pH units. The standard defines calibration, measurement and reporting procedures for pH testing of raw chemicals used in photographic materials manufacturing. It is explicitly not intended for routine monitoring of formulated photographic processing solutions (for example, finished developers).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and accuracy: pH determination to within ±0.1 pH units for photographic‑grade chemical solutions.
- Calibration buffers: Use certified buffers - pH 4.0 (potassium hydrogen phthalate), pH 7.0 (potassium/sodium phosphate) and pH 10.0 (potassium carbonate/borate hydroxide) - with typical accuracy ±0.01 pH units. Buffers should be replaced daily.
- Apparatus and performance:
- pH meter with at least ±0.01 pH resolution/accuracy.
- pH glass electrode (0–14 range) and suitable reference electrode; sodium‑corrected electrodes recommended for measurements > pH 10.
- Constant‑temperature water bath maintained at 25 °C ±1 °C for equilibration.
- Sample preparation and measurement:
- Dissolve the test portion (as specified in the applicable ISO 10349 part) in 50 ml of freshly boiled and cooled water and measure after electrode equilibration.
- Record pH to the nearest 0.1 pH unit.
- Calibration procedure: Calibrate meter immediately before measurements; check slope (≥95%) and recalibrate or service electrodes if criteria are not met.
- Electrode care (Annex A): Includes storage recommendations (e.g., pH 7 buffer for glass electrodes, 3.5 mol/L KCl for references), preconditioning, and rejuvenation procedures for glass and reference electrodes.
Applications and users
ISO 10349-13 is practical for:
- Quality control laboratories in photographic chemical manufacturing.
- Suppliers of raw photographic-grade chemicals ensuring batch conformity.
- R&D and analytical labs validating chemical purity and stability.
- Regulatory or certification bodies assessing photographic chemical specifications.
The standard helps ensure consistent, traceable pH measurement - a critical attribute affecting chemical reactivity, product stability and downstream photographic performance.
