ISO 10360-9:2013 specifies procedures for testing the performance of coordinate measuring machines of various designs that use multiple probing systems in contacting and non-contacting mode. It applies to acceptance tests for verifying the performance of a CMM and its probes as stated by the manufacturer;reverification tests performed by the user for periodical checking of the CMM and its probes; interim checks performed by the user for monitoring the CMM and its probes in between reverification tests. It considers CMMs of single ram designs as well as multiple ram designs with small or with large overlapping measuring volume. It applies to multiple probing systems consisting of different types of probes (such as an imaging probe combined with a contacting probe, or two contacting probes of different individual performance). The tests described are sensitive to many errors attributable to both the CMM and the probing systems; they supplement the length measurement tests and the individual probing error tests of each probing system. The length measurement tests, as well as the individual probing error tests (for example, ISO 10360-5, ISO 10360-7, or ISO 10360-8), should be performed before executing the procedures in ISO 10360-9:2013.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10360-9:2013 is part of the ISO 10360 series of Geometrical Product Specifications (GPS). It defines acceptance, reverification and interim tests for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) that use multiple probing systems (contacting and non-contacting). The standard addresses CMM designs including single-ram and multi-ram machines and covers probe combinations such as an imaging probe with a contacting probe or two tactile probes of different performance.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of tests: Procedures to verify combined-system performance when two or more probing systems are used together on one measurement task.
- Precedence: Length measurement tests and individual probing error tests (e.g., ISO 10360-5, -7, -8) should be performed before ISO 10360-9 procedures.
- Types of errors evaluated:
- Multiple probing system form error (P_Form.Sph.n×25::MPS): radial variation of points on a test sphere measured by combined probes relative to the least-squares centre.
- Multiple probing system size error (P_Size.Sph.n×25::MPS): uncertainty in determining the sphere diameter from points measured by multiple probes.
- Multiple probing system location error (L_Dia.n×25::MPS): dispersion (diameter of minimum circumscribed sphere) of centres from several probe-based fits.
- Testing framework: Environmental and operating condition controls, defined measuring equipment and artifacts, measurement procedures, data analysis methods and compliance criteria.
- Documentation: Requirements for indicating combined-probe performance in product documentation and data sheets.
Applications and users
Who uses ISO 10360-9:2013:
- CMM manufacturers for declaring and verifying multi-probe performance during acceptance testing.
- Calibration and metrology laboratories performing reverification and interim checks.
- Quality and inspection engineers in manufacturing sectors (automotive, aerospace, precision engineering) who combine imaging, tactile, laser or CT probes on CMMs.
Practical benefits: - Detects errors that only appear when combining different probe technologies or probe conditions.
- Ensures reliable measurement traceability and consistent inspection results across complex measurement tasks.
- Supports specification and procurement decisions by providing standardized performance criteria for multiple probing systems.
