ISO 10414-2:2011 provides standard procedures for determining the following characteristics of oil-based drilling fluids: drilling fluid density (mud weight); viscosity and gel strength; filtration; oil, water and solids concentrations; alkalinity, chloride concentration and calcium concentration; electrical stability; lime and calcium concentrations, calcium chloride and sodium chloride concentrations; low-gravity solids and weighting material concentrations. The annexes provide additional test methods or examples that can optionally be used for the determination of: shear strength oil and water concentrations from cuttings; drilling fluid activity; aniline point; lime, salinity and solids concentration; sampling, inspection and rejection; rig-site sampling; cuttings activity; active sulphides; calibration and verification of glassware, thermometers, viscometers, retort kit cups and drilling fluid balances; permeability plugging apparatus with set-screw secured end cap; permeability plugging apparatus with threaded end cap; elastomer compatibility; sand content of oil-based fluid; identification and monitoring of weight-material sag; oil-based drilling fluid test report form.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10414-2:2011 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Field testing of drilling fluids - Part 2: Oil‑based fluids" - is an international standard that defines field (rig‑site) procedures and test methods for characterizing oil‑based drilling fluids. It provides validated, repeatable procedures for measuring physical, rheological, chemical and filtration properties required for safe and effective drilling operations. This second‑edition standard is based on API RP 13B‑2 and is intended for use where consistent, auditable field testing of non‑aqueous mud systems is required.
Key topics
The standard covers practical test methods and requirements for:
- Drilling fluid density (mud weight) - primary methods for rig‑site determination.
- Viscosity and gel strength - using Marsh funnel and direct‑reading viscometers.
- Static and high‑temperature/high‑pressure (HTHP) filtration - including HTHP procedures up to 175 °C and up to 230 °C for high‑temperature systems.
- Oil, water and solids concentrations - retort tests (volumetric and gravimetric) to quantify phase fractions.
- Chemical analyses - alkalinity, chloride, calcium, lime, salinity and related calculations for whole fluid and aqueous phase.
- Electrical stability - test for emulsion integrity.
- Low‑gravity solids and weighting material concentrations - for solids control and formation protection.
- Annexes provide optional and supporting methods: shear strength, oil/water retained on cuttings, aniline point, active sulphide analysis, elastomer compatibility, sand content, permeability plugging apparatus details, calibration and rig‑site sampling procedures, and a standard oil‑based test report form.
Practical applications
ISO 10414‑2:2011 is used to:
- Support real‑time mud monitoring and decision‑making on drill sites.
- Verify mud fitness for purpose (stability, rheology, filtration control) during drilling, tripping and cementing campaigns.
- Guide troubleshooting of emulsion breakdown, solids buildup, weight‑material sag and annular losses.
- Provide standardized data for reporting, regulatory compliance and audit trails.
Who should use it
- Mud engineers, drilling fluid service companies and field technicians.
- Drilling and completion engineers responsible for hydraulics and wellbore stability.
- Onshore/offshore rig personnel, laboratories performing field analyses, and regulators or operators needing consistent test methods.

- API RP 13B‑2 (Recommended practice for field testing of oil‑based drilling fluids)

Using ISO 10414‑2 helps ensure consistent, defensible field test results for oil‑based drilling fluids, improving operational control and reducing drilling risk.
