ISO 10424-2:2007 specifies requirements on rotary shouldered connections for use in petroleum and natural gas industries, including dimensional requirements on threads and thread gauges, stipulations on gauging practice, gauge specifications, as well as instruments and methods for inspection of thread connections. These connections are intended primarily for use in drill-string components. Other supplementary specifications can be agreed between interested parties for special tolerance requirements, qualification, testing, inspection and finishing. ISO 10424-2:2007 is applicable to the following preferred rotary shouldered connection designs: number (NC) style; regular (REG) style; full hole (FH) style. These are traceable to an internationally supported system of gauges and calibration.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10424-2:2007 - Petroleum and natural gas industries - Rotary drilling equipment - Part 2: Threading and gauging of rotary shouldered thread connections - specifies requirements for the design, threading, gauging and inspection of rotary shouldered connections used primarily in drill‑string components. The standard covers dimensional requirements for threads and gauges, gauging practice, gauge specifications and the instruments and methods used for inspection. It applies to preferred connection designs: NC (number), REG (regular) and FH (full‑hole) styles and is traceable to an internationally supported system of gauges and calibration.
Key Topics
- Thread geometry and dimensions: Definitions and tolerances for thread profile, pitch, lead, thread height, taper and bevels for mating parts.
- Gauging practice and gauge hierarchy: Requirements for master and working gauges (grand/regional/reference/working), gauge relationships, mating stand‑off and interchange stand‑off, and gauge contact points.
- Calibration and certification: Calibration system requirements, acceptance criteria, measurement methods and gauge certification procedures to ensure traceability.
- Inspection methods and instruments: Procedures for measuring pitch diameter, thread height, taper and lead, with guidance on inspection instruments and methods.
- Product options and treatments: Guidance on optional features such as stress‑relief grooves, low‑torque features, surface treatments, cold working and break‑in procedures.
- Units and conversions: Data provided in both SI and United States Customary (USC) units; conversion guidance and unit‑specific tables/annexes.
- Notable definition: the standard locates the gauge point at 15.875 mm (0.6250 in) from the make‑up shoulder.
Applications
ISO 10424-2:2007 is used where reliable, interchangeable thread connections and controlled gauging are essential:
- Manufacturers of drill‑stem elements and rotary shouldered connections for producing threads to standardized dimensions.
- Quality control and inspection labs for acceptance testing, gauge calibration and certification (compatible with ISO/IEC 17025 practices).
- Operators and drilling contractors to ensure drill‑string component interchangeability and to specify acceptance criteria in purchase orders.
- Gauge manufacturers and calibration laboratories implementing master/working gauge systems and traceable calibration schemes.
- Purchasers and vendors negotiating supplementary tolerances, special testing and finishing requirements.
