ISO 10426-1:2009 specifies requirements and gives recommendations for six classes of well cements, including their chemical and physical requirements and procedures for physical testing. ISO 10426-1:2009 is applicable to well cement classes A, B, C and D, which are the products obtained by grinding Portland cement clinker and, if needed, calcium sulfate as an interground additive. Processing additives can be used in the manufacture of cement of these classes. Suitable set-modifying agents can be interground or blended during manufacture of class D cement. ISO 10426-1:2009 is also applicable to well cement classes G and H, which are the products obtained by grinding clinker with no additives other than one or more forms of calcium sulfate, water or chemical additives as required for chromium (VI) reduction.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10426-1:2009 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Cements and materials for well cementing - Part 1: Specification" - defines the chemical and physical requirements, classification and recommended testing procedures for well cements used in oil & gas well construction. This third-edition ISO standard covers six cement classes (A, B, C, D, G and H) and three sulfate-resistance grades (O, MSR, HSR). It provides specifications for cement manufacture, permitted additives, sampling, and the physical tests needed to demonstrate quality and suitability for well cementing operations.
Key Topics
- Cement classes and grades: Descriptions and intended uses for Classes A, B, C, D (manufactured with processed additives or set modifiers as allowed) and Classes G & H (clinker-based, with limited additives). Grades include ordinary (O), moderate sulfate-resistant (MSR) and high sulfate-resistant (HSR).
- Chemical and physical requirements: Requirements for clinker composition, calcium sulfate additives, and allowances for processing or chromium(VI)-reducing chemical additives.
- Sampling and test procedures: Standardized procedures for sampling frequency and timing, and for preparing slurries for testing.
- Laboratory tests specified:
- Fineness tests
- Free-fluid (formerly free water) determination
- Compressive strength testing (reference to ASTM C109/C109M)
- Thickening-time measurement (consistometers and pressurized devices)
- Calibration procedures for thermocouples and controllers (informative annex)
- Marking, packing and special materials: Requirements for product marking, packaging, and related materials such as bentonite.
Applications and Users
ISO 10426-1:2009 is essential for professionals and organizations involved in well construction and cement supply:
- Cement manufacturers - to produce compliant well cements and document allowable additives.
- Oil & gas operators and drilling contractors - to select cement classes/grades appropriate for downhole conditions (temperature, pressure, sulfate exposure).
- Laboratories and testing agencies - to perform standardized fineness, free-fluid, compressive strength and thickening-time tests.
- Procurement, quality assurance and regulators - to specify acceptance criteria for well cement deliveries and field use.
Practical benefits include improved consistency in cement performance, more reliable slurry design data (pumpability and set behavior), and better communication between vendors and operators.
