ISO 10426-5:2004 provides the methods for the testing of well cement formulations to determine the dimension changes during the curing process (cement hydration) at atmospheric pressure only. This is a base document, because under real well cementing conditions shrinkage and expansion take place under pressure and different boundary conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10426-5:2004 - "Petroleum and natural gas industries - Cements and materials for well cementing - Part 5" specifies laboratory methods to determine shrinkage and expansion of well cement formulations at atmospheric pressure. The standard defines test methods and apparatus to measure dimensional changes during cement hydration under ambient-pressure, controlled-temperature conditions. It is a base document: real downhole cement behaviour also depends on pressure and different boundary conditions not covered here.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose
- Measurement of dimension changes (bulk shrinkage/expansion and hydration shrinkage) of cement slurries during curing at atmospheric pressure only.
- Defined test methods
- Annular ring test - measures linear bulk shrinkage or expansion under free access to water. Uses a split annular mould (inner ring OD 50.8 mm, outer ring ID 88.9 mm) and optional spacer block for shrinkage tests.
- Membrane test - determines bulk shrinkage/expansion under impermeable conditions (described in the standard as an alternative boundary condition).
- Apparatus and calibration
- Mould components and materials (corrosion-resistant, e.g., stainless steel), spacer block dimensions, high-temperature curing and cooling baths, temperature measurement (±1 °C calibration), and consistometer for slurry conditioning.
- Ring resilience calibration (example: 1 000 g load should increase gap by 2 mm ± 0.3 mm) and routine calibration schedules.
- Sampling and slurry preparation
- Sampling guidance to match laboratory materials and conditions with wellsite inputs, and reference to ISO 10426-2 for mixing, density and conditioning procedures.
- Terminology
- Clear definitions for bulk expansion, bulk shrinkage and hydration shrinkage, and explanation of how dimensional change affects pore volume, pore pressure and internal stress.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it
- Drilling and completion engineers, cementing contractors, laboratory technicians, quality control personnel, additive and cement manufacturers, and researchers developing or qualifying well cement slurries.
- Why it matters
- Quantifying shrinkage and expansion helps predict risks such as microannuli, poor zonal isolation, interzonal communication and failed hydraulic seals. The tests support:
- Screening and qualification of expansion agents and shrinkage-reducing additives.
- Laboratory quality control and comparative evaluation of slurry designs.
- Development of lab-to-field correlations (with care, since downhole pressure is not simulated).
- Quantifying shrinkage and expansion helps predict risks such as microannuli, poor zonal isolation, interzonal communication and failed hydraulic seals. The tests support:
