ISO 10570:2004 defines performance requirements for an articulated frame lock designed to prevent unintended machine articulation of earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165 and with an articulated frame during either shipment or maintenance.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10570:2004 specifies performance requirements for an articulated frame lock used on earth-moving machinery with an articulated frame (as defined in ISO 6165). The standard covers design and testing criteria to prevent unintended machine articulation during shipment or maintenance. It is the second edition (2004) prepared by ISO/TC 127 (Earth‑moving machinery), SC 2 (Safety requirements and human factors), and replaces the 1992 edition.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies only to articulated frame locks intended to secure machines during shipping or servicing - not for use while the machine is self-propelled or travelling.
- Mounting positions
- The lock shall secure the machine in the straight‑ahead position.
- It shall be mounted either on the side normally used to access the operator’s station or as the manufacturer specifies.
- If maintenance requires an articulated position, the lock must secure that required position.
- Mounting must be achievable without frequent adjustment of the two frame parts.
- Attachment and retention
- Lock components (links, bars, pins and attachments) shall not become separated from the machine during use or storage.
- Colour and visibility
- Link parts of the frame lock shall be coloured red and clearly visible in stored and installed positions. If the machine is red, a contrasting colour must be used.
- Performance testing
- Tests must be performed with both left- and right-hand articulation.
- For most machines, the lock shall not show permanent structural deformation when subjected to a force equal to twice the maximum force induced by the steering system at manufacturer-specified upper limits.
- For articulated-frame dumpers the test force is 1.2 times the induced steering force.
- For locks used only during lifting/transportation (e.g., some scrapers and graders) the manufacturer may calculate required forces equal to twice the maximum force expected during those operations.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 10570:2004 is relevant to:
- OEMs and machine designers specifying or integrating articulated frame locks
- Safety engineers and maintenance planners ensuring secure transport and service procedures
- Transport and logistics providers moving earth‑moving machinery
- Test laboratories and compliance officers performing performance verification
- Regulators and procurement teams specifying safety requirements for fleet equipment
