ISO 10619-1:2017 specifies three methods for measuring the flexibility of rubber and plastics hoses and tubing (methods A1, B and C1), where the deformation of the hose or tubing is measured, and two methods for measuring the stiffness (methods A2 and C2) by measuring the force required to bend rubber or plastics hoses or tubing to a specific radius at ambient temperature. Methods A1 and A2 are suitable for rubber and plastics hoses and tubing with inside diameter of up to and including 80 mm. Method A1 allows the measurement of the flexibility of the hose or tubing by measuring the reduction in outside diameter when the hose is compressed between two plates. Method A2 provides a means of measuring the force required to reach a specific bend radius when the hose or tubing is compressed, as between two plates. The test can be carried out at a specified internal pressure. Method B is suitable for rubber and plastics hoses and tubing with inside diameter of up to and including 100 mm, and provides a means of assessing the behaviour of the hose and tubing when bent around a mandrel. The final mandrel diameter used can be taken as the minimum bend radius of the hose or tubing. As this value is determined by the reduction of the outside diameter, it can be used as a measure of the flexibility of the hose or tubing. The hose or tubing being tested can be unpressurized, pressurized or under vacuum and, if required, with the curvature or against the curvature of the hose or tubing, if such curvature is present. Methods C1 and C2 are suitable for rubber and plastics hoses and tubing with inside diameter of 100 mm and greater. Method C1 provides a means of determining the flexibility of the hose and tubing at the minimum bend radius. Method C2 provides a method of measuring the stiffness of the hose and tubing at the minimum bend radius.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10619-1:2017 specifies standardized bending tests at ambient temperature to measure the flexibility and stiffness of rubber and plastics hoses and tubing. The document defines three deformation-based flexibility methods (A1, B, C1) and two force-based stiffness methods (A2, C2). These methods apply to different hose internal diameter ranges and allow testing under unpressurized, pressurized or vacuum conditions where applicable.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test methods
- Method A1 (flexibility): compression between two plates, measures reduction in outside diameter. Suitable for hoses/tubing with inside diameter up to and including 80 mm.
- Method A2 (stiffness): force required to reach a specified bend radius while compressed between plates; can be performed at a specified internal pressure. Applicable up to 80 mm ID.
- Method B (flexibility): bending around a mandrel; final mandrel diameter can be taken as the minimum bend radius. Suitable up to and including 100 mm ID. Can be run with hose unpressurized, pressurized, or under vacuum.
- Methods C1 (flexibility) and C2 (stiffness): for hoses/tubing with 100 mm and greater inside diameter, measured at the minimum bend radius.
- Measurement outputs
- Deformation expressed as ratio T/D (minimum outside dimension in curve / average outside diameter).
- Stiffness measured as force to attain a specific bend radius (and flexural stiffness for C2-note that units/formula were updated in the 2017 revision).
- Sample preparation and conditions
- No test within 24 hours of manufacture; conditioning for at least 16 hours at standard laboratory temperature/humidity per ISO 23529.
- Standard test temperature/humidity references given; apparatus and number of test pieces (typically two) specified.
- Reporting
- Test report must reference ISO 10619-1:2017, state the method used and include required test data and conditions.
Practical applications and users
- Hose and tubing manufacturers - product development and quality control to verify flexibility, minimum bend radius and bending resistance.
- Independent test laboratories - provide certified test data for customer specifications and compliance.
- Specifiers and purchasers - select hoses/tubing suited to installation bend requirements and service conditions.
- R&D and design engineers - compare materials, constructions and pressure effects on bending behaviour.
- Regulatory and procurement bodies - include in procurement specifications and conformity assessment.
