Overview
ISO 10833:2025 - Textile floor coverings - Determination of resistance to damage at cut edges using the modified Vettermann drum test - specifies a laboratory method to assess the susceptibility of textile floor coverings to mechanical damage at cut edges. It applies to broadloom carpet and to tiles and planks. The test uses a modified Vettermann drum in which a stainless steel ball with rubber studs rolls against specimens to fatigue cut edges; the fatigued edges are then assessed for damage.

- Use single- and, if necessary, double-sided 50 mm adhesive tape to secure edges and prevent fraying.

- Condition specimens face-up in standard textile atmosphere per ISO 139 for at least 24 h.
- Insert specimens in drum, place the ball, set revolutions to 11 000 cycles, run with vacuum operating continuously.
- After testing, vacuum-clean specimens with four passes each direction; assess appearance.
- Assessment and reporting:
- Evaluate for fraying, delamination, tuft out, laddering/shooting and newly defined filamentation (hairiness not removable by brushing/suction).
- Include test conditions, specimen orientation, vacuum use and results in the test report.
