ISO 10846-2:2008 specifies a method for determining the dynamic transfer stiffness for translations of resilient supports, under specified preload. The method concerns the laboratory measurement of vibrations on the input side and blocking output forces and is called “the direct method.” The method is applicable to test elements with parallel flanges (see Figure 1). Resilient elements, which are the subject of ISO 10846-2:2008, are those which are used to reduce the transmission of vibration in the lower part of the audible frequency range (typically 20 Hz to 500 Hz) to a structure which may, for example, radiate unwanted fluid-borne sound (airborne, waterborne or others), and the transmission of low-frequency vibrations (typically 1 Hz to 80 Hz), which may, for example, act upon human subjects or cause damage to structures of any size when vibration is too severe.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10846-2:2008 - "Acoustics and vibration - Laboratory measurement of vibro‑acoustic transfer properties of resilient elements - Part 2" - specifies the direct method for laboratory determination of the dynamic transfer stiffness of resilient supports for translatory motion under a specified static preload. The standard covers tests on elements with parallel flanges and measures input-side vibrations together with the blocking output force to derive a frequency‑dependent stiffness function used to characterise vibration isolation performance in the low and low‑audible frequency ranges.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Dynamic transfer stiffness (k2,1): defined as the frequency‑dependent ratio of blocking force phasor to input displacement phasor (k = F2,b / u1).
- Blocking force measurement: methods and criteria for measuring the output force when output displacement is constrained.
- Test conditions: application of static preload, mounting of test elements (including auxiliary fixtures if needed), and requirement for parallel flanges.
- Translations covered: normal and transverse translations relative to the flange plane.
- Frequency range: intended to cover low frequencies (typically 1 Hz up to an upper limit determined by the test rig); relevant practical bands include ~1–80 Hz for low‑frequency vibration and ~20–500 Hz for lower audible frequencies.
- Apparatus and transducers: requirements for accelerometers, force transducers, analyzers and suppression of unwanted vibrations and flanking transmission.
- Test procedures: installation, source signal selection, measurements, and linearity checks (verify approximate linear behaviour for given preload).
- Data evaluation and presentation: calculation of dynamic stiffness, one‑third‑octave‑band averaging, narrow‑band results, measurement uncertainty and required test reporting.
Applications and practical value
- Product specification and manufacturer datasheets for engine mounts, building supports, appliance isolators and shipboard mounts.
- Product development and design validation to predict vibro‑acoustic behaviour and structure‑borne sound transmission.
- Quality control and acceptance testing of resilient elements.
- Input data for vibration transmission and acoustic models (calculating transfer of vibration energy through isolators).
- Useful where control of low‑frequency vibration or reduction of structure‑borne sound is critical.
