This document specifies requirements for lifting sets for use with containers in offshore service, including technical requirements, marking and statements of conformity for single and multi-leg slings, including chain slings and wire rope slings.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10855-2:2018 - Offshore containers and associated lifting sets - Part 2: Design, manufacture and marking of lifting sets specifies technical requirements, marking and conformity statements for lifting sets used with offshore containers. It covers single- and multi‑leg slings (chain and wire rope slings), shackles, materials, certificates and identification needed for safe offshore service. The standard supports compliance with IMO MSC/Circ.860 (SOLAS context) and is intended for the dynamic, high‑wear conditions of open‑sea handling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Requirements for design, manufacture and marking of lifting sets for offshore containers; not a certification procedure for containers themselves.
- Working Load Limit (WLL): Minimum WLL of lifting sets is determined using Annex A (dynamic amplification considered). Slings must be rated for intended sling‑leg angle; no rating for leg angles > 45°. Formulas in the standard define WLL for 2‑leg and 4‑leg slings (using cos ϑ).
- Master link and dimensions: Master link for crane hook must have minimum internal dimensions of 270 mm × 140 mm.
- Shackles: Required Grade 6 or Grade 8; comply with EN 13889, EN 1677‑1 or ABNT NBR 13545. Pins restricted to bolt‑type with hexagon head, nut and split cotter pin; pin diameter tolerance −0 +3 %.
- Chain slings: Must meet EN 818‑4 requirements.
- Wire rope slings: Must meet EN 13414‑1 with restrictions - wire ropes 6‑stranded of type 6×19 or 6×36; terminations by ferrule‑secured thimble; rope grades 1770 or 1960.
- Materials & testing:
- Marking & traceability: Marking of WLL, identification tags (Annex B example), and statements of conformity are mandated for safe in‑service identification.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: offshore container and lifting‑set manufacturers, rigging and lifting equipment designers, offshore operators, third‑party certifiers, procurement/specifiers, marine and safety inspectors.
- Why it matters: Ensures lifting sets are designed and manufactured for offshore dynamic loads, improves safety during handling, provides traceability for inspection and regulatory compliance.
- Typical use cases: selection and procurement of slings and shackles for platform supply, subsea operations, load‑out and shipboard transfers; manufacturer quality control and marking for fleet use.
