This document specifies requirements for lifting sets for use with containers in offshore service, including technical requirements, marking and statements of conformity for single and multi-leg slings, including chain slings and wire rope slings.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10855-2:2024 - "Offshore containers and associated lifting sets - Part 2: Design, manufacture and marking of lifting sets" specifies technical requirements, marking and conformity statements for lifting sets used with offshore containers. The standard covers single- and multi-leg slings (chain slings and wire rope slings), shackles, materials, testing and certification requirements for lifting equipment intended for offshore service. ISO 10855-2:2024 is the second edition and aligns with IMO guidance (MSC/Circ.860) for offshore container handling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Requirements for lifting sets used with offshore containers, excluding operational use and maintenance.
- Working load limit (WLL): Minimum WLL of lifting sets is determined using Annex A to account for dynamic amplification in offshore lifting. Sling leg rating must consider the intended angle of use (maximum leg angle to the vertical = 45°).
- Master link dimensions: Master (top) link to crane hook: minimum internal dimensions 270 mm × 140 mm.
- Shackles: Shall be Grade 6 or Grade 8, comply with ISO 2415 (or EN alternatives), pin tolerance −0 +3 %, and be bolt-type with hex head, hex nut and split cotter pin.
- Chain slings: Must meet all requirements of EN 818‑4 (including alternative rating method in Annex A of EN 818‑4 where applicable).
- Wire rope slings: Must meet EN 13414‑1 with specific restrictions:
- Wire rope 6‑stranded types 6×19 or 6×36
- Termination by ferrule secured thimble (ferrules allowing visual tail inspection recommended)
- Use wire rope grades 1770 or 1960
- Materials and testing:
- Marking and certificates: Requirements for preparation of component and sling certificates, and marking of lifting sets (see Clauses 6 and 7).
Practical applications and users
ISO 10855-2:2024 is used by:
- Offshore container manufacturers and designers to ensure lifting set compatibility and safety
- Lifting equipment and sling manufacturers (chain and wire rope sling suppliers)
- Rigging engineers, offshore operators and vessel/offshore facility maintenance teams specifying safe lifting gear
- Inspection bodies, certifiers and procurement professionals verifying conformity and marking Practical benefits include standardized WLL calculation for offshore conditions, improved traceability through certificates and marking, and harmonized testing and material requirements to reduce failure risk in harsh marine environments.
