ISO 10862:2009 specifies requirements and test methods for quick release devices as a component of the small sailing-craft trapeze system worn whilst afloat. The quick release device is intended to quickly release the wearer from entrapment and minimize the risk of drowning in the event of a failure to release from the sailing-craft trapeze system by other means. The quick release device is intended to be easily accessible and operated in all conditions that might occur whilst in use, including when a craft is capsized or inverted.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 10862:2009 (Quick release system for trapeze harness)
ISO 10862:2009 specifies requirements and test methods for quick release devices used as part of small craft sailing trapeze systems. The standard addresses design, marking, operation and environmental resistance of quick-release mechanisms intended to free a sailor from entrapment (including capsized or inverted conditions) and reduce the risk of drowning. Key performance limits include the device releasing the user within 5 seconds and the ability to be re-armed within 30 seconds.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Function and purpose: The quick release device must enable intentional immediate separation of the user from the craft’s attachment point under emergency load conditions.
- Performance targets: Release within 5 s under static, dynamic and human-subject tests; re-arming within 30 s after release.
- Operation: Device must be simple, operable with one gloved hand, and effective in all likely afloat conditions (including capsized/inverted positions).
- Compatibility: Defines user and craft main attachment fittings, exclusively-compatible vs non-exclusively-compatible fittings, and a standard craft attachment fitting shape.
- Identification and marking: Quick release controls must be clearly identifiable (text/pictogram such as “Pull” and an arrow) and use an orange‑red color range for visibility.
- Resistance requirements and tests:
- Inadvertent release: Resistance to accidental disconnection and snagging.
- Overload & dynamic load tests: Static and dynamic strength without deformation that compromises function.
- Operation in-line / out-of-line: Human subject and torso-dummy tests to verify release under realistic geometries.
- Environmental durability: Debris resistance, salt-water exposure (corrosion/salt spray), and corrosion testing.
- Test methods: Sequential test procedures (Clauses 5.x) define sampling, human-subject test panels and pass/fail criteria.
Practical applications and users
- Manufacturers of trapeze harnesses, quick-release fittings, and small craft equipment use ISO 10862:2009 to design and certify safe release systems.
- Product test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies apply the specified test methods to validate performance.
- Boat designers, racing teams, sailing schools, safety officers and procurement specialists reference the standard when specifying trapeze systems to improve crew safety.
- Regulators and class associations can use the standard to set minimum safety requirements for competitive and recreational small craft.
