ISO 10893-1:2011 specifies requirements for automated electromagnetic testing of seamless and welded steel tubes, with the exception of submerged arc-welded (SAW) tubes, for verification of hydraulic leak-tightness. It is applicable to the inspection of tubes with an outside diameter greater than or equal to 4 mm, when testing with eddy current, and greater than 10 mm when testing with flux leakage method. It can also be applicable to the testing of hollow sections.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10893-1:2011 specifies requirements for automated electromagnetic non-destructive testing (NDT) of seamless and welded steel tubes (excluding submerged arc‑welded - SAW) to verify hydraulic leaktightness. The standard covers eddy current and magnetic flux leakage (MFL) inspection techniques, applicable to tubes (and hollow sections) with outside diameters ≥ 4 mm for eddy current and > 10 mm for flux leakage. It defines test techniques, equipment, reference tube calibration, acceptance criteria, and reporting requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test techniques covered
- Eddy current: concentric coil, segment coil, fixed or rotating probe/pancake coil.
- Magnetic flux leakage (MFL): fixed or rotating magnetic transducers, multiple concentric transducers.
- Dimensional and material limits
- Eddy current applicable from OD ≥ 4 mm; MFL from OD > 10 mm.
- Concentric coil eddy current limited to OD ≤ 250 mm (also applicable to square/rectangular tubes up to a 250 mm diagonal).
- Segment coil limits: 2 × 180° coils up to Ø 219.1 mm; 4 × 100° coils up to Ø 508.0 mm.
- MFL is not applicable to austenitic stainless steel tubes.
- Reference tubes and calibration
- Defines use of reference standards (holes, longitudinal/transverse notches) and matching of reference tube diameter, thickness and surface condition to production tubes for equipment calibration.
- Equipment and operation
- Ancillary requirements
- Inspection timing (after primary production operations), surface cleanliness and straightness, calibration, acceptance, and test reporting procedures.
Practical applications and users
ISO 10893-1 is aimed at manufacturers, NDT service providers, quality engineers and procurement/supply chain professionals in industries using steel tubing (pressure tubing, mechanical, automotive, structural, and plant piping). Typical uses:
- Inline automated inspection during tube production to verify hydraulic leaktightness.
- Pre-shipment quality control to detect through‑wall leaks or major imperfections that compromise leak tightness.
- Calibration and validation of automated eddy current and MFL inspection lines.
