ISO 10893-4:2011 specifies requirements applicable to liquid penetrant testing of seamless and welded tubes for the detection of surface imperfections. It is applicable to all or any part of the tube surface as required by the relevant product standards. It can also be applicable to the testing of hollow sections.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10893-4:2011 specifies requirements for liquid penetrant inspection (LPI) of seamless and welded steel tubes to detect surface imperfections. It applies to all or part of tube surfaces as required by product standards and can also be used for hollow sections. The standard defines when and how penetrant testing should be carried out, the classification of indications, acceptance levels, and reporting requirements - making it a practical reference for NDT (non-destructive testing) of steel tubing.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & timing: LPI is normally performed after primary production operations (rolling, heat treatment, sizing, straightening, etc.).
- Surface condition: Tubes must be clean and free from oil, grease, scale or contaminants that interfere with inspection.
- Personnel qualifications: Operators must be trained and certified per ISO 9712, ISO 11484 or equivalent; NDT authorization and supervision are required.
- Penetrant systems & techniques:
- Two detection techniques: colour‑contrast (visible) and fluorescent (UV).
- Three penetrant system types: water‑washable, post‑emulsifying, and solvent‑removable.
- Choice depends on surface condition and test category; stainless steels require low‑halogen, low‑sulfur materials.
- Operational parameters:
- Typical application temperature range: 10 °C to 50 °C (procedures must be qualified if outside this range).
- Typical dwell time: manufacturer‑recommended, commonly 3–30 minutes.
- Rinsing/cleaning: water rinse under appropriate lighting with pressures around 200 kPa (2 bar) (max 350 kPa/3.5 bar); water temperature < 40 °C.
- Drying limits: tube surface should not exceed 50 °C (or 70 °C for some drying methods if agreed).
- Developer application and development times are specified to ensure adequate bleed‑out.
- Evaluation & classification of indications:
- Indication types: linear, rounded, accumulated, and non‑relevant.
- Four acceptance levels (P1–P4) set minimum dimensions for consideration (Table 1 gives 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0 mm for P1–P4 respectively) and Tables provide permissible counts/dimensions per frame aperture.
- Inspection conditions: Visual inspection without magnification; fluorescent inspections require darkened area and specified UV‑A illumination conditions.
Applications and users
ISO 10893-4 is used by:
- Tube manufacturers and quality managers for production acceptance.
- NDT technicians and inspection bodies performing LPI on steel tubing.
- Purchasers and third‑party inspectors for contract inspection and acceptance criteria. Industries include oil & gas, power generation, mechanical engineering, automotive, construction and any sector using steel tubes where surface integrity is critical.
