ISO 10972-3:2003 establishes requirements which apply specifically to the mechanisms and related components of tower cranes, in addition to the general requirements given in ISO 10972-1. These additional requirements concern the arrangement, features and characteristics of the crane mechanisms, and the minimum requirements for certain mechanism components. Rules for the proof of competence calculation regarding different limit states (yield strength, fatigue, wear) are excluded from ISO 10972-3:2003. ISO 10972-3:2003 is not applicable to the climbing mechanisms and related components used on tower cranes, nor to the climbing frame.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10972-3:2003 - Cranes: Requirements for mechanisms - Part 3: Tower cranes specifies minimum requirements that apply specifically to the mechanisms and related components of tower cranes, in addition to the general provisions of ISO 10972-1. The standard focuses on the arrangement, features and characteristics of crane mechanisms (hoist winches, luffing systems, trolleys, slewing and travelling mechanisms) and minimum component requirements. It explicitly excludes proof-of-competence calculations for limit states (yield, fatigue, wear) and is not applicable to climbing mechanisms or the climbing frame.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard sets out practical mechanical, hydraulic and electrical requirements to enhance safety and reliable operation of tower crane mechanisms, including:
-
Design criteria
- Requirements for powered hoist winches, luffing mechanisms, trolley and crane travelling and slewing mechanisms.
- Prohibition of uncontrolled gravity-driven movements for powered mechanisms.
-
Power and motors
- Motor selection and ventilation requirements (references IEC 60204-32).
- Performance factors: torque, starts per time unit, wind loads, friction, inertia and operating inclinations.
-
Couplings
- Selection to avoid vibration, damp torque peaks and compensate misalignment.
- Fail-safe considerations so coupling element failure does not create hazardous motion.
-
Brakes
- Automatic application on power cut-off; thermal sizing for operation frequency.
- Dynamic braking moments for hoist and luffing drums (minimum multiples of rated-load moment).
- Braking arrangements for trolley, travelling and slewing mechanisms, including holding against in-service wind.
-
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Design to comply with ISO 4413: fluid selection, viscosity, reservoirs, filters, pump performance, pressure measurement and cavitation prevention.
-
Other mechanism aspects
- Gear drives, rope and chain requirements, out-of-service slewing devices, maintenance and instructions, wheel/rail guidance and anchoring for out-of-service wind loads.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 10972-3 is used by:
- Tower crane manufacturers and OEM designers to define mechanism specifications.
- Structural and mechanical engineers responsible for crane subsystem design.
- Safety engineers and compliance officers preparing technical documentation and risk assessments.
- Maintenance teams and service providers for inspection, brake and hydraulic system servicing.
- Procurement professionals and clients specifying mechanism requirements in orders and tenders.
