ISO 10987-2:2017 gives requirements for identification and labelling, applicable processes, and relevant information for remanufactured components for earth-moving machinery. ISO 10987-2:2017 is applicable to remanufacturing for reuse of components on earth-moving machines as defined in ISO 6165. It can be used for all types of off-road machines.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 10987-2:2017 - Earth-moving machinery - Sustainability - Part 2: Remanufacturing provides requirements and guidance for the remanufacture of components used in earth-moving and other off‑road machines. The standard covers identification and labelling, applicable remanufacturing processes, and the information that must accompany remanufactured components. It aims to improve product quality, promote reuse, and support sustainability objectives (resource conservation, reduced emissions and energy savings) in the earth‑moving machinery sector.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to remanufacturing for reuse of components on earth‑moving machines as defined in ISO 6165 and can be applied across all off‑road machine types.
- Definition of remanufacturing: Process performed by the OEM, its associates, or a formally authorized entity to return a worn or non‑functional core to a “like‑new” or “better‑than‑new” condition (quality and performance).
- Remanufacturing process steps: Take‑back, inspection, disassembly, cleaning, classification, assessment, reconditioning/repair, reassembly, testing, labelling and packaging (see Annex B–D for process guidance).
- Product marking and labelling: Remanufactured products must retain original product information and be clearly identified as remanufactured. Required labelling elements include remanufacturer name/address, product name/model, part/serial numbers (if applicable), regulatory markings, remanufactured date (if applicable) and mass (if applicable). Local labelling requirements can be added; Annex E provides an example mark.
- Quality and safety: The remanufacturer must ensure the core meets remanufacturability criteria, verify completion of safety improvement programs, and provide service information when needed (e.g., altered torque specifications).
- Design and lifecycle considerations: Encourages design for remanufacturability and defines related terms (core, remanufacturable parts, directly usable parts, recyclable material).
Applications
- Ensures consistent, verifiable quality for remanufactured components used in excavators, loaders, graders and other earth‑moving equipment.
- Useful for OEMs, authorized remanufacturers, maintenance shops, fleet managers, procurement teams and sustainability officers implementing circular‑economy practices.
- Supports compliance with regulatory and customer sustainability reporting, and helps standardize remanufacture labelling for resale, warranty and service traceability.
