This document specifies a shear test for the characterization of adhesives in a bond. The shear stress/strain properties of the adhesive (including the shear modulus) are useful for advanced design work, such as in finite element analysis methods.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11003-1:2019 defines a torsion test method for characterizing the shear behaviour of structural adhesives using butt-bonded hollow cylinders. The standard specifies specimen preparation, test apparatus, test conditions and calculations needed to determine shear stress/strain properties - including shear modulus - which are essential inputs for advanced design and finite element analysis (FEA) of bonded structures.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: measure torque versus shear deformation on an annular adhesive bond between two coaxial hollow cylinders until failure.
- Specimen preparation:
- Adherends: aluminium alloy or steel recommended; adherend shear modulus must be ≥10× adhesive modulus.
- Bond thickness: preferred 0.20 mm; acceptable range 0.05–0.50 mm for special adhesives.
- Bond geometry: annular bond width at least 10× thickness; strict coaxial alignment and control of bond thickness.
- At least five specimens per adhesive formulation.
- Apparatus:
- Torsion-testing machine (≥300 N·m capacity, preferably 1 000 N·m) or adapted tensile machine.
- Displacement transducer mounted near the bond with range ~2 μm–1 000 μm and accuracy ±1 μm.
- Temperature-controlled chamber for non-ambient tests.
- Test conditions:
- Standard test temperatures per ISO 291; specimen surface temperature measured within ±1 °C.
- Shear rate γ̇ between 0.0005 s⁻¹ and 0.02 s⁻¹; preferred 0.01 s⁻¹. Corresponding angular rate is set from specimen geometry and bond thickness.
- Calculations and outputs:
- Shear stress derived from measured torque and specimen radii.
- Shear strain obtained from measured displacement after correcting for adherend twist.
- Shear modulus (G) obtained from the initial linear slope of the stress–strain curve.
- Report mean and standard deviation, shear strength and strain at failure.
Applications and users
ISO 11003-1:2019 is used where accurate adhesive shear properties are required for design, simulation and qualification:
- Structural adhesive manufacturers validating product mechanical properties.
- Automotive, aerospace and marine engineers using FEA to predict bonded joint performance.
- Materials laboratories performing comparative adhesive testing and quality control.
- Research organizations studying bond mechanics, temperature or rate-dependent adhesive behaviour.
Practical benefits include improved input data for simulations, validated design safety margins for bonded assemblies, and standardized test methods for reliable comparison between adhesives.
