This document provides requirements for the selection of safe combinations of metallic cylinder and valve materials and cylinder gas content. The compatibility data given is related to single gases and to gas mixtures. Seamless metallic, welded metallic and composite gas cylinders and their valves, used to contain compressed, liquefied and dissolved gases are considered. NOTE In this document the term "cylinder" refers to transportable pressure receptacles, which also include tubes and pressure drums. Aspects such as the quality of delivered gas product are not considered.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 11114-1:2020 is an international standard developed by ISO that specifies the requirements for the selection and safe use of metallic cylinder and valve materials in contact with gas contents. The standard focuses on ensuring compatibility between the cylinder/valve materials and the gases-whether compressed, liquefied, or dissolved-contained within seamless metallic, welded metallic, and composite gas cylinders. The guidance addresses material compatibility with both single gases and gas mixtures, helping stakeholders avoid hazardous interactions.
Key Topics
- Material Compatibility: Details the criteria used to determine if a metallic material can safely contain a specific gas or gas mixture. Compatibility assessment covers:
- Corrosion (in both dry and wet conditions)
- Hydrogen embrittlement
- Stress corrosion cracking
- Formation of dangerous products
- Violent reactions, such as ignition
- Cylinder and Valve Materials: Focuses on the most common metallic materials used in cylinder and valve manufacturing, including carbon steels, stainless steels, aluminium alloys, brass, nickel alloys, and copper-based materials.
- Gas Types and Mixtures: Provides compatibility data for a range of gases, from inert gases like argon to reactive and corrosive gases such as ammonia and chlorine.
- Operating Conditions: Describes the significance of dry versus wet conditions in cylinder environments, especially regarding corrosion risk and material selection.
- Material Selection Process: Offers a framework for organizations to systematically select compatible combinations of gas content and metallic material, taking into account known risks and conditions of use.
Applications
ISO 11114-1:2020 is essential for industries and organizations involved in gas storage, transportation, and handling. Key applications include:
- Industrial Gas Supply: Manufacturers and suppliers of industrial gases depend on this standard to design and select gas cylinders and valves that safely contain a wide variety of gases.
- Medical Gas Cylinders: Ensures the safety and reliability of cylinders used to store and transport medical gases, reducing the risk of material failure.
- Calibration Gases & High-Purity Gases: Laboratories and specialty gas providers refer to ISO 11114-1 when selecting materials for handling high purity and calibration gases, where contamination prevention is critical.
- Transportable Pressure Receptacles: Supports manufacturers, regulators, and users involved in the distribution and regulatory compliance of gas cylinders, tubes, and pressure drums.
- Design and Engineering: Provides engineers and designers with a reference for selecting suitable materials during new product development or when modifying gas storage systems.
Related Standards
The effective use and implementation of ISO 11114-1:2020 are complemented by several related international standards:
- ISO 10156 - Gas cylinders - Gases and gas mixtures - Determination of fire potential and oxidizing ability for the selection of cylinder valve outlets
- ISO 10286 - Gas cylinders - Terminology
- ISO 10297 - Gas cylinders - Cylinder valves - Specification and type testing
- ISO 11114-2 - Compatibility of cylinder and valve materials with gas contents - Part 2: Non-metallic materials
- ISO 11114-3 - Compatibility of cylinder and valve materials with gas contents - Part 3: Autogenous ignition test for non-metallic materials in oxygen atmosphere
These standards collectively guide the safe design, fabrication, selection, and testing of gas cylinders and associated materials.
By following ISO 11114-1:2020, organizations can minimize the risks of cylinder or valve failure, extend equipment life, and ensure regulatory compliance in the management of metallic gas cylinders. Using the appropriate material-gas compatibility data-especially in conjunction with related ISO gas cylinder standards-plays a critical role in safe compressed gas storage and handling across a range of industries.
